Hi. . .
I ordered up my X3 today and have a few questions.... I have BIG plans for my box but for now all i can afford is my chip. I want to upgrade my HDD in the future but i was just wondering if i should hold offon installing the chip untill i get my new drive or if it is relativly common to do these mods on two seperate steps.....

Cheers... and keep you fingers crossed for me.

Six words for you:

"Don't run before you can walk."

Do things one at a time. Install the chip and familiarise yourself with it. Get used to using it and once you're at the stage where you feel it's time to upgrade the HDD, come back and ask relevent questions then.

So many people try and do everything in the one hit and run into problems because of it. Making things too difficult is an unnecessary quality.

Research properly so you can answer that question yourself would be my advice. Its amazing how if you read tons of stuff some of it actually sticks in your mind. I did the HDD and X3 in one go first time out and found it really easy but to be honest we all have different skills so you would be the best person to judge whether you can do it together.

Uber Noob Please help if you may :) - Modding a banned XBOX

I am new to xbox never mind modding.

I have a banned Xbox a friend gave me, he wasn't pirating just wanted to change the look of his name in xbox live and M$ banned him, a bit sly I think.

Anyhoo, I would like to use this xbox, is there a way and can restore it to its former glory (able to use HD etc) or will I never be able to use it again.

If a replace the chip with a RROD and flash the stock firmware would that fix it, or should I just stuff it an modd it!

Thanks for your help

So, he didn't play backups but his drive was flashed? To change your gamertag you just do it on live and pay 800 M$ points...

Nope I don't think the drive is flashed, need to check, any particular way of knowing if it is hacked.

So I can change the gamer tag and create an account for myself and it is a viable xbox again?

I didn't say that. I was merely stating the way that you are supposed to change your gamertag on live. Changing the gamertag will not unban the xbox or restore functionality to the hard drive. I believe that with the latest dashboard the hard drive functionality was restored, what dashboard is it on?

I'll check that as soon as I get home this evening, as I say, noob to XBOX as well. Where would I look to get the dashboard version - although I'll prob figure it out when I boot it. Is there any other 'Numbers - versions' you need?

BTW I really appreciate this help

You can check your dashboard version buy going to the system settings tab, then console info, then system info. The 2.0.XXXX number is the dashboard version, the latest is 2.0.12625 i believe. You can always download the latest dashboard update and install it with a usb flash drive from xbox.com/update

I'm sorry for going off topic but when I saw this topic I thought ubergeek was calling out for help. Anyways once a console is banned its banned. No way to fix that. Though if you flash the latest dashboard on the console then hdd installs will work again. Just remember with a banned console, all your game saves from that console will appear corrupt on other not banned consoles. The only way to change that is to wipe your secdata.

It sounds like I may as well just flash it then, was looking at the blaster CK3 - what you fink?

SO bassically, with the latest dashboard installed, I can use the HDD fine, I can borrow a few games off my mate and have a bit of fun, save my own save games, install my own games to the HDD for faster access but,

Can't bring my saves gaves to my mates xbox and play those save games on his, can't play on-line with xbox live!? - Is that all? I've bassically got a cool normal console for free cause my mate likes to play on-line!

I take it secdata stands for security data, what is this any how would I go about wiping it - in doing so all that would achieve is me being able to play my save games on my mates xbox?

Thanks for the help - this is gr8

The blaster 360 I believe is the addon that allows you flash the drive by installing it onto the top of the xbox. You will still need to open the xbox once to install it. It's really just a gimmick to me. You might as well get a Ck3 pro or lite but it really depends on what drive you have. You might not need anything at all or you can just send it to someone to do it for you.

Cool thx for the info, I'll look into it, I'll need to figure out which drive it has, any way of doing that without opening it? Plus can you confirm the other we Q's I asked above please?

Thanks again

Yeah you wont be able to bring your save games and you wont be able to play xbox live. Secdata, I'm not sure if it stands for security data but its just called secdata. To clean the secdata, you need to read the NAND, which is the memory chip on the mother board of the xbox by soldering a couple wires to the xbox from your computer. Then you wipe a section of code from the memory and install it back. Then it will be clear.

This, or you should take it to a professional to have it done

Yeah secdata should be done by experienced hands only cause you have a good chance of really messing up your xbox if you do not know what you are doing.

So what will clearing the secdata do for me, will it restore the xbox to useable status on-line or will it just restore the ability to bring my savegames to a different xbox.

If it completely restores the xbox it might be worth it.

no it simply restores the ability to use gamesaves and profiles on that xbox as well as others without corrupting them.
