having seen the mobo identification thread 'road map for noobies' i have two boards that the smd look quite different on, one are more chunkier than the other..im not entirely sure what the picture is referencing..am i supposed to be going by the distance apart of the writing for STP5D1 & STP5D2 or the actual look of the SMD's ?..bothe boards have the pink topped caps but the SMD's are definateley slightly different..both boards have the traces clearly viewable..to me it looks like the top picture has post out where the bottom doesnt..thats me going by the SMD

This picture is definately a V2 corona as it has the phison controller...

This one is either a version 1,3 or 5 dependent on the post out and has a ST tsop, i am not sure if it ever had a hdd with it..

The difference between the two pictures on the mobo identification thread is the number of traces running to the CPU. A missing post out has the 11 traces to the left but not the 8 to the right ( hope I'm making sense)

You can also save yourself all of that by getting a multimeter and setting it to continuity mode. Check between POST_OUT1 and GND. If it beeps, you need a FIX QSB.

in which case that is saying this board needs a post fix adaptor as i am getting a reading going from postout1 to the AV port..my multimeter has no audiable signal..it just gives out a reading

How do you come to that conclusion? Getting a reading? What does that mean exactly? Do you know how to use a multimeter?

If u get a reading, and the traces are there then u dont need a post fix adapter. If the traces are not there, u do. When the traces are gone, I believe the point becomes a gnd point. could be wrong about it being a gnd point, as i always just check the traces.

possibly not..i put it into continuity mode denoted by the arrow symbol pointing to a line..when i touch the probes together i get a reading on the screen..numbers that roll down..same as when i touch positive to postout point and negative to the AV port

Yes it goes to GND when it's not there.

That's why I said you set to continuity and check between GND and POST_OUT1 and if it beeps, you need the fix board.

so i DO need a postout fix board ?
No, you don't.

You need to look at what you're doing and explain to yourself why a reading of 462 (whatever that is, as you've still not said) means that POST_OUT1 is grounded.

If none of this makes sense, stop.

Ok.. my meter is a shifty Chinese one.. It has a continuity setting but no beeper for it.. when I put the probes together the screen shows numbers that decline to zero... when I put the red probe to post out 1 point on reverse of board and black probe to the average port the meter gives a reading but stops at 462.. so I assume that's the reading for post out because it's there.. whereas if it wasn't it would be the same as if I had touched the probes together.

ding ding ding!!!

Yep - there's no continuity, so POST_OUT is good. Ergo, no FIX board needed.

Lol.... I'm expecting to much.. I must get a meter with a buzzer though as it would save me making myself look like a complete moron. Thank you.
or you could just learn how to use the one you have? if you set it to OHM (Ω) and checks for continuity then a value very close to 0 mean continuity.

Exactly this.

You already know you can replicate continuity by touching the probes together (as that's what continuity means), so use the result as an indicator.
