Odd Problem

New to the xbox thing, not to computers... having an odd problem after flashing my X3 chip with EvoX v2.3. Basically there is no way for me to get the xbox to even recognize the X3 anymore. No matter what I do (quick tap, long tap, etc) it always boots like a regular xbox with no special screen. Is it possible that I've flashed my chip with the original microsoft bios that was named wrong on the server I downloaded from (really stupid I know)... or perhaps there is a compatability issue? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Trying to understand the root of the problem mostly...

Try booting the backup BIOS. You press power and eject at the same time, but get to the power button a little sooner than the eject (if that makes sense). the X3 logo should change to purple.

Sorry I did not mention it, but I have already tried the power+eject option and it makes the xbox try to boot 2 times and then come on with flashing LED around the eject button. I'm assuming this is a standard xbox thing when it can't boot up properly. Are there any other options?

It is EvolutionX V2.3 pulled from xbox tribe. I should update what the problem is - earlier the xbox would boot as a regular xbox no matter what I did, then it went through a 'transitional' phase of its life where it booted with a quick tap and long tap as a regular xbox and the power+eject crashed it, and now it crashes for anything but a long tap (in which case it boots as a regular xbox). The bank settings seem to have no effect, but I have not tried every feasible combination.

Martin, I appreciate your help on this.

If you cannot boot the backup BIOS and you cannot boot from any of the banks (if you've tried all 15 combinations!), then your best hope is a hotflash with a working chip.

Okay, will use it when I get the chance...

On a side note, I was under the impression that the X3 was compatable with most bioses, is this not the case?

from ur last post 19 it seems like a bad joint as well as the wrong bios. the chip won't work then it will and it flashes then it won't again.

CHECK, CHECK AND CHECK AGAIN!!!!

Martin, please elaborate...

I do have access to another chip (friend's X3). Would it be possible to load the bios with the other chip, then hotswap them and flash my chip's bios with a disc? Or does the xbox continue to call the chip once it boots? Martin I have to say you are infinitely more helpful than anyone else on here, thanks.

If you boot your other X3 to access FlashBIOS, then once at the menu screen, you can swap the chip. I believe you don't need the switch connected as it boots to banks 1234 by default without one. If you find that you do need the external switch connected, then once swapped, set switches to on on off off (flash protect off) to flash Banks 1234.

If you have a 1.6, you'll need to reconnect the 5v extra cable too. If not, then it's a straight plug in. You don't even need to reconnect the d0 connecter either.

BE CAREFUL WHEN PLUGGING IT IN !!!!! that's all I can say here.

Select the flashing option you want - personally I prefer the network flash. It should flash the chip for you. I'd flash it with X3 1959 as once it works and you can get into X3CL you can flash the other 1MB and backup BIOS from there.

Download FlashBIOS 3.0.3 and X3 1959 in preparation..

well yeah but the other bios's are sh*t

whats the point of having an x3 if you are not going to use the bios

have you even seen the features of x3 config live yet ?

No I haven't seen the features, looking forward to it.

The reason I wanted evox v2.3 is that one of my co-workers has rigged up a way to run some solid modeling software on his xbox (he has evox v2.3) - this would essentially free up a computer for me since I'm never working and playing xbox at the same time (unfortunately). It's all irrelevant anyhow, just looking to get the bios on there.

did the chip hotswap and reflash, no problems and worked as well as I could hope.

don't know what the deal is with my X3's 'backup' bios as it still does not work, but I've got evox v2.3 and X3_1959 on there, so I'm happy. I love the color changing feature for the startup animation - it's the little things in life that get you through...

much thanks to all who helped

Booting the backup BIOS.

I do the following -

press the power button and immediately after, press the eject button. The X3 should turn purple (for at least a second).

IF this isn't working, then check your power/eject cable is connected to the right socket on the power/eject board.

All features worked with the other X3 chip I used to boot my xbox, so I am assuming my chip is not working properly. Like I said though, I got the other bioses on my X3 so I'm set.
