It was called World War II... maybe you've heard of it.
Ok boys and girls, it's time for Catalyst's useless opinion hour. Remember, you asked for it!
Although there were Germans that were fighting nobly for their country, it is pretty easy to see why that would be overshadowed by the atrocities that happened at the hand of the Nazi army.
After WWI Germany was decimated and many of it's people were poor and much of the prosperity they knew before the war was "taken" from them by the Allied Powers.
Hitler allowed them a perfect scapegoat in the Jewish settlers that now filled their borders. Every problem the average German citizen faced was blamed on the Jews. Even if a German man raped a Jewish girl it was considered her fault for implanting deviant sexual thoughts or some other such nonsense.
Now the question you have to ask yourself about your grandfather is this. Even if he didn't participate in any of the torture or Genocide that the Nazi's committed before and right up to the end of the war... by knowing about it and by supporting a government who willingly did do these things, isn't he just as much to blame as the people who committed these atrocities? Especially if he was in the SS, which, no matter how you want to glorify it, was the most ruthless and vile branch of the Nazi Army!! The SS was responsible almost as many German civilian deaths as the Allied Army!!
You see, when you proudly display the SS symbol, whether you intend to or not you are supporting what happened during that period... and you are supporting the actions of the SS, which were some of the most horrible actions the world has seen.
My great-grandpa was in WWII, on the German side. My grandfather fought for the US in the same war. I'd like to believe that my great-grandfather was an old confused man who didn't realize the evil he was serving... but I'll never know. I'm certainly not proud of it though!!
But, I'm not your dad. You want to keep that avatar that's cool with me.
I just think it's a little ignorant. It's like if I had a KKK symbol because my grandpa was in the KKK but he never actually killed any black people... it'd just be stupid.
Just my opinion of course!
