quote (btw, notice how the MCPX is brown in the center. this is about where the smoke was coming from. btw, why did xecuter add that 5vpin if if could cause probs like this? seems like an accident waiting to happen.) did u smell the smoke? did it have a strange sweetish smell? most components made of sillicon that get hot and burn will have a strange sweetish smell to it and to tell the truth it sounds like the MCPX has died as u said the smoke was coming from that.

hope that helps

IF you can get one - and I doubt it, unless it's off an old mobo, you still have to remove the old one and re install the new one, on surface mount solder - NOT easy. Also there is NO gurantee that this will work as there MAY be other faults on the board due to the overload.

Secondly, you may as well just throw your mobo and buy another off Ebay - much easier and probably more reliable.

yeah, i know it would be difficult, but since
A)i need to practice soldering
and
B)i have a spare fragged mobo with a good MPCX

i may as well try it.

also, a friend is selling me his 1.0 mobo and psu for $10 =D

If you're going to take a shot at de and re-soldering surface mount devices, I'd suggest you take a very good hard long read of Numbnuts' Guide to Soldering Surface Mount Devices...http://warmcat.com/milksop/soldering.html

From what I've heard about those fearless folk who had a shot at upgrading their XBOX memory, you'll also be needing plenty of time and soldering braid to release the existing surface mount device. Personally I'd also think about going to a low temp solder and a very fine soldering iron tip as well.

Edit: Oh yeah, these videos (RAM upgrade) may also help you with the de and re-soldering processes...http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=208420

Good luck!

I've seen that video before it's an excellent tutorial. And braid works better for the fine work involved in soldering/desoldering chips from mobo's.

Just practice a lot.
