hey,

i was just wondering, i have an old hard drive in my pc that i dont use any more, and instead of spending money i dont really have on a new one, why not just use that 1?

its a Maxtor Diamax 9 7200 40Gig.....

2 things worry me, well my xbox tends not to read discs 1st time round, (slayers auto installer) so if there is nothing on that HDD that the XBOX can use.. I.E a dashboard...
then how would i go about installing the HDD, over FTP?

and the other thing, it is full of crap, so would it be wise to format before hand? or just let slayers format it? (proving it loads!)

What DVD drive do you have in your Xbox ? It sounds suspiciously like a Thompson. Burn Slayers to a Fuji DVD-R at slow speed and it should work on a Thompson. That's how I got many of them to read it. Let Slayer's do a full rebuild of your 40GB drive. It will do the formatting and partitioning.

Thompsons are known to be complete pieces of sh*t. They all give the damn dirty discs after like 5 minutes of use. Go with a new Hitachi or Samsung drive. www.llamma.com

I actually had a Philips that was WORSE. I don't know if the thing just went bad over time or what, but I couldn't get the damn thing to read any DVD+R or DVD-R media. I replaced the drive with a Samsung. Fuji DVD-R seems to work with every Thompson I've tried.

Don't diss Thomson drives, I have a Thomspon that although it reads less discs than the Samsungs, is much better than my two Samsungs because it plays backup games: the two samsungs I have only read them and freeze at the mk logo. My thomson actually plays the backup game "mk deception".

That's very odd. All of the Samsungs that I've seen have been superb at reading DVD+R and CD-RW. The Thompsons were so-so, but 1 of them was absolutely terrible. It would only read DVD-R and nothing else. The Philips I had in my 1.5 was the worst Xbox DVD drive that I've seen.

my Thompson drive works great, Never ever had any problems with it.

I always burn DVD-R's at the slowest possible speed with a dummy file added.

So far, the only thing I've gotten to work on my Philips (came with a 1.0 xbox) is CD-RW's. I've tried CD-R's and DVD+R's. If you have a philips, I highly suggest you do NOT use the pot mod method (I screwed my dvd drives eye over).

If you have a Philips drive, I suggest you swap it with a Samsung drive from Ebay. :) That's what *I* did anyway !
