Does anyone know why my switch will only boot up if the charged dongle is inserted? my friend got his the same time and his boots normally with out the dongle (we both bought the sx-pro)

without it mine is completely dead like as if has no power (no back light or anything) I actually though it blew up

I updated the switch to the latest firmware as of yesterday ( it was required to use fat-ex ) and have the latest sx os )

thank you so much for the help

here were the steps I did to install

1) formatted new micro sd with the switch
2) then downloaded the os and put it on the micro sd
3) booted with power and vol up ( jig and charged dongle)
4) it created the license file on the sd
5) went to the website and validated the license and downloaded the returned file and copied it to micro sd
6) booted with power and vol up went to options turned on auto rcn mode
7) put game on micro sd root
8) tried to boot with dongle and no jig it was completely dead like as if it was blown up
9) charged dongle and it booted (games ran NP very impressed great job T.E. btw)
10) Powered off the switch completely tried to boot with out dongle dead (no back light or anything)

I mentioned this to my friend and he said his still works with out the dongle in regular mode (still powers on)
sorry for the long message I just wanted it to be a little detailed

Thank you for the reply .
But i think you misunderstood my problem the switch battery did not die it was the dongle ( which was also not the problem )

I guess to sum up the problem it is my switch will only power on if the dongle is inserted ( other wise it is completely dead like as if the power button does not work)

charged switch / charged dongle = power and goes to sx os
charged switch /no dongle = completely dead (no power at all )

wow wait if the switch is in auro rcn and the battery dies you actually have to take apart the switch and remove the battery and connect it to another switch ( did i understand that correctly?)

- - - Updated - - -

"if your battery ran out, then I suggest removing the battery and popping it in another switch to charge up"

because i was assuming you were referring to the dongle ( if it the dongle i just charge with the provided cable)
because i don't see that being a nightmare you could even probably use a portable usb phone charger

they need to come up with update to trigger voltage the rcm mode enough to keep it from getting low. or not getting low

which leads me back to my original question... why is mine the only one dooing this ( I think)

this has gone slightly off topic my question was why do i need the dongle plugged in for it to boot ? not as to what the voltage requirements should be.

100% remove auto rcm it's slightly risky. either use the rcm jig each time or leave it in the side of the switch (which is the safest option)

there is a tiny chance you can get the switch stuck between the stage of not having enough battery to charge itself in rcm, and it turning on. in which case the only way to fix is to remove the battery or keep trying to charge it with various cables. (mine once worked strangely with the official nintendo usb c to usb cable) however i cant confirm it was 100 percent in the limbo. its probably best to keep it off for now till an better way is found to do so like the magnetic joy-cons out now.

now I do remember my battery level got real low in rcm and it would not boot payload but left it in the usb in computer and it charge up enough to push payload

I have a question:

I have AutoRCM installed - will my switch charge while in sleep mode while running OS X payload, i.e. once in the main menu of the Switch and I can see albums and my games? Is it charging correctly just like it would normally, i.e. not slow?

I have it docked and in sleep mode. I am just wondering if it is actually charging, too confused reading all the different threads about this issue.

If your battery is dead with autoRCM on, simply connect your charger and press power button for more than 15-20 seconds.

Nintendo switch will start charging with screen off and you only need to wait about one hour to be able to turn it on.

Please, stop spreading "fake news" if you never tried this.

P.D. battery draining problem with autoRCM is only on SX OS. If you try using console without SX OS and use hekate autoRCM, you won't have the battery drain problem when you turn it off. It's a SX OS BUG.

Please people who talk about autoRCM, please test it before properly.

OK... New here so sorry if this has already been said.
I cannot sort the power drain issue, but i have found a solution to charging the battery if it runs dry.
If you put the dongle in and press power after the splash screen for Team executer comes on, quickly add your charger, you will now get the top left charge icon but with the lightning/charging icon. now just leave it.
i have just run into this issue for stupidly not researching this issue and left my switch undocked last night with only 14% charge. got home from work and couldnt boot or charge it, so just tried this and mine is now charging and is all good.
hope this helps someone out as i was dreading having to either convince someone to let me pop open their switch or buy another one.

Good Morning.
The same happens to me.
Just turn on the console if I put the dongle.
When I get home I will try to try to uninstall the AutoRCM to see if it turns on.
Yesterday I tried to establish the data of the factory, to keep the power button for 12 seconds and to force the shutdown. But when trying to turn on nothing. OFF !!!
I put the Dongle and VOALA !! ON !!!
