Open Tray Error After Kamikaze...

I think I just successfully screwed up my latest lite on pcb with the kamikaze unlock....but I need some advice from the professionals to be sure.

I have done about 6 of these without fail before this one, but this is my first 0401 FW. I know the kamikaze and flash process is the same for all winbond D4S drives. But possibly a trick I'm missing? Or could I have drilled too far maybe?

So I used a sharp craft/workshop knife as I always do to drill the chip, trying to be slow and careful and stopped as soon as I heard the jungleflasher beep. Then continued to flash my drive with normal results using the correct key I dumped from the OFW, and the correct LT3 0401 FW.

What happens when the xbox try's to load a game is a deeper toned reading sound coming from the drive... Almost like the brakes on your bike, although it does seem to be trying. This happens for about 10 seconds then the open tray message appears to assume no disc in the tray. The tray opens and closes normally as it should, I have read about drives opening/closing on their own at random and changing speed but this doesn't seem to be the case.

I have since tried unlocking and relocking, and double tapped outro/reset as I read that somewhere, no change. As this was for a customer and needed it working I have now replaced the PCB with a spare that I had for that console, running the same CFW firmware I created originally for the seemingly failed PCB. Console runs original and backup discs perfect with the newly installed PCB. This ruled out a laser issue.

Anybody experienced anything like this before? I just hope this isn't my first kamikaze fail as I'll need to buy a replacement. Any suggestions are welcome!

In short, you've cut too deep and damaged the chip.

Replace the PCB. No amount of unlocking/locking is going to repair a physical line.
Thanks Martin my worst thoughts are confirmed then. Could you recommend a place to get replacements at a fair price? Locked or unlocked.

Thanks. I think it's now time to invest in a proper size drill bit. As it's always worked for me with the craft knife till now I've never seen the need. Goes to show the proper recommended tools should be used I guess. I'll forever be a bad example to anyone preparing to attempt the kamikaze. Hopefully my mistake helps others.

OP, just a side question to you, how did you mark the spot for drilling? It could be me, but I don't really see any crossing lines to mark the spot. Did you drill according the Mediatek print under the "k"?

Im not saying that you did, but if you did, it could be smart for future chips that you are going to drill you use a ruler to mark the lines.

If you did however mark it with lines, ignore this post...

There's a small chance you could salvage this by using some liquid solder or wire glue to fill the drilled hole back up.

If you used The Kamikaze template to drill the hole, it isn't 100% as I've failed using that one in the past before.

I don't mark with lines either.

I use a USB Microscope to take a picture of the chip. I then use a paint program to draw in the lines (counting legs), so I know where the point is in relation to the print on the chip. Not had one fail yet.

Hi guys thanks for the response. Yes I did mark the lines I know you can't see in this pic the pencil has rubbed off completely. I may go for this photo method next time though! It can be sometimes hard to see the pins though the mass of gunk they surround the chip with. Thanks to all those with suggestions. I will try the solder or wire glue that vengeful said. I've got nothing to lose.
