I'm at a lost in looking for a fix for the Hitachi 78 drive and require some help:
I've got a Hitachi 78 that I've flashed with the ixtreme 1.2 firmware and was able to get backups to work for a few days...
While playing a game, a message popped up saying that the disc is no longer in the system. After rebooting and trying backup and original discs, I would get the dreaded "open tray error". The error occurs once the disc is put in. The laser heads mechanics move - but it doesn't look like it tries to read the discs.
I've tried the following -
Opened up the drive to ensure that the magnet is not stuck to the top (it's still securely fixed to the drive ring)...
Attached a foam to form the buffer between the laser head and the switch - i didn't try too hard to switch to different types of obstructions yet
Also tried to reflash the drive back to the original firmware - which led to my 2nd problem...
As i tried to put the drive back into Mode B via Slax 2.1 on a V6421 pci card -
1 - it requires 2x press of the eject button to close the tray - but it doesn't pop back out automatically
2 - when i load it the drive up in mode b, in windows - the drive is detected; however data discs and original
dvd movies can't be read - windows gives a "potential"
i/o error
Does it look like I need a new laser/drive? and where to go about getting one if it's needed?
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks
