Hey all,

I successfully flashed my Hitachi 78 a couple weeks ago. Today I turned it on as normal, and the DVD drive started growling at me. Now it wont load any disk backup or original. And either gives me a open tray error or a unplayable disk, and still makes ungodly noises when it tries to load up. I really don't have the slightest idea what to do. Rubber band method?

Any help would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Dike

JUST TRY RESTORING THE ORIGINAL FIRM AND SEE IF IT PLAYS THE ORIGINALS FIRST. IF IT DOESNT THEN YOU HAVE BIGGER PROBLEMS THAN THE SWITCH METHOD FOR OPEN TRAY ERROR!
(THE RUBBER BAND METHOD IS ONLY FOR SAMSUNG DRIVES)

Thanks for the response. I don't think it is a firmware problem. The noise it makes is horrendous. The weird thing is it plays music cd's fine. Not dvd's, 360 originals, or backups. I'm thinking its either a motor or laser problem. Does any one know where I can get a 0078fk laser? Or a 78 dvd rom? Or any other suggestions would be really nice.

:D Figured it out. The top spindle of the DVD rom magnetized the metal part on the motor, and picked it up. I just superglued it back, and it works again. Although it still makes a strange sound...I ran into a bunch of people with the same problem, here and on XS. Unfortunately some of those people bought a new DVD drive. Hope this helps some people in the future, cause it gave me quite the headache.

I wish I had seen this post yesterday as I just posted having the same problem with my Hitachi 59DJ. I wonder if I'm having the same problem. Do you have any pictures to show exactly what caused the problem and what you glued back? Thanks in advance.

Worked for me too. Yesterday my xbox 360 went from no probs to unreadable disk, for everything.

For clarity for anyone else I took the xbox apart unscrewed the 4 screws around the Hitachi 78FK drive to release the top part of the drive casing and there is a little metal washer / grommet bout the size of button A stuck to the roof of the casing on the inside. It needs gluing back in a circular groove on the spindle directly below it.

Figured out that the "washer" was the thing stuck to the top of the drive here is a pic of it after we took it off the top of the drive.

It sticks pretty good to the top so dont be afraid to pull pretty hard. Glue it down so that the smoth side it up. Put the drive back together. Easy peasy one two threezy.....:D

thanks very much quazy. I had this problem with the hitachi i'm trying to flash at the mo and it didn't want to boot games and this is why i initially i thought if i flashed it it might fix it.

the weirdest thing is, though, that when i opened the dvd drive up i looked at the magnet thing stuck on the top and fiddle with it, and thought to myself, bit weird, but suppose it must be like that. lol how wrong was i.

Cheers :D

DumonKri I also though it belonged there until my buddy also was messing with it and it came off and it all made sence.

hey what if your washer piece is still in tact but keep getting the open tray error?
If it is only with backups you get the error, try this.

If it's with originals as well, check your SATA cable, if that isn't the cause, it's probably your drive/laser.

I have a funny problem. I got a X360 with DVD Drive problem. When you press the eject/close button, the green light blink onece, but nothing happens on the DVD drive. The DVD drive is Hiatchi 59. I thought it is a DVD Drive problem and spent at least 3 hours to read the firmware of the DVD drive.

You know what happens? After I install a working hitachi drive, the problem is still there. Then I replace the power cable and SATA cable, nothing changed. Replace with another DVD drive, no lucky. It seems that I got a broken mother board.
