I was getting the open disc error and I tried replacing the lens and got the same error. So I found a buddy with a bad motherboard and used his flashed dvd drive and now my 360 works like a charm. I thought it was lens and it turned out to be the entire drive was bad. This is on the Hitachi 47 drive and I replaced it with a Hitachi drive. No problems since changing itcoolguy001 said:

hey i have the open tray problem and the washer was like in the picture so i replace it back but i having this noise like disc was scratching with something i can't figure out what making the noise .. any idea?

oh also i didn't have any noise before but when i remove the dvd case out the noise came and even i put the case back in it still making noise
This could be a lifesaver as my mate started getting the unplayable disc error ( hitachi 78 withe originals and backups ( i flashed his drive so i'm sweating it here ) but i have dismantled the dvd drive and yes the washer is magnetised and stuck to the roof of the drive.
i just need to get some superglue to see if this method works.

Well new to all this but thought this may help someone out. Our xbox 360 started to get the unplayable disk with all disks. After much searching found this place with the washer magnet thing. I had no more warranty on it so I said what the hell. Opened it all up, found I have a hitachi rom. I took the rom apart and my washer was still in place, which crushed me. I opened an old dvd rom and when I moved the laser back and forth the gear on the right of the laser would spin. I checked my xbox rom and it would move foward but would skip the gear when moving back. I saw a spring on the bracket which applies preasure to the white twisted gear. (Wish I would have taken pics). I removed the small spring and stretched it a bit, put it back and checked the laser travel back and forth and no more skipping. I still put a bit of glue on the washer thing just in case. YYYEEESSSS it worked. I hope this can help someone else that was in the same boat..

I something similar to this except it will make the growling noises but it will read the back up after a few ejects and its samsung.

I'm having the same problem, it plays audio CDs, but does not play DVD movies or backups or originals. But the difference is i'm having a samsung ms28, is this problem found only with Hitachi?
