I had the same issue not long ago with my xbox you have to download the update on xbl.
I just swapped hdd to my xbl xbox for 2 seconds to download the update on xbl.
If you dont have an xbl xbox you could swap hdd with a friend for 2 seconds to dl update.

I'v had a phat forever that actually played avi files and then i bought this slim with no hard drive. Tried playing the avi file from a usb and it asked for an update. You think if I transfer my phat hard drive data to a slim hdd that it would work then? Also @MARTIN C... If I have to update through xbl will I need to revert to stock first for this update?

No worries - good thing is it's a one-hit thing so once you have the media update on that console it shouldn't need it again.

I would stress that after you're on 13604 and you have the Media update downloaded, sign out of Xbox Live and your gamertag and then retry an avi file. If it still asks for the update, create a new XBL gamertag and re-download with this. It should then be signed to this console.

You sure it needs an update and not just to be on Xbox Live?

Try my suggestion above as it should stop it from happening.

you have to log on to Xbox live website and there you can transfer your downloads to your new console then you wont have to do it again and again every time you do an update
