I'm so sick of 2 external HDDs and the mess they look like for my rgh aside from the fact that with 2 external HDDs my Xbox uses as many outlets as a Sega Genesis +CD+32X attachments......so I'm tossing it all in a PS3 slim shell I have lying around.....the best PSU I have lying around that's small enough for the job is what appears to be a delta v1.0 original Xbox PSU my question is how do I simply get the thing to turn on with out the motherboard at all so I can plug a sata adapter into the 12v 4 pin molex to power my drives...... photos and guide coming when complete also

So u are sticking the external Hdds in the Ps3 case? Could u attach the molex adaptor to the 12v standby points in the PSU. I think ;pics of your plan would be useful.

here maybe this will help...im not using the PS3 PSU im using an original xbox PSU as it already has a 4 pin molex i can adapt to sata easily.
I plan on running the two 2TB hdds stacked on top of each other (where the black HDD is) and then using the slide rail for the PS3 2.5" hdd to make a swappable HDD as well (so a total of 3 HDD's) considering making the PS3 front USB ports a USB hub for the 360 also. Here are some images one is the layout im going to use to fit the HDD's in the PS3 shell the other is a picture of an original xbox PSU....but in order to use the PSU i need to know where to put a jumper wire to make it turn on....i know you can do this with PC PSU's but im not sure what 2 pins to jump or put a switch to to turn the original xbox PSU on.

EDIT i found this here: http://diy.sickmods.net/Tutorials/Xbox1/Power_Supply_Pinouts/

Here you can see the diagrams of the PSU connectors. The colors of the PSU wires will vary a bit sometimes, but the important thing is the position of them, not the color. As you can see in the diagrams the PowON and PowOK signals are not to be used as current sources; they are just signals between the PSU and the mobo. PowON is a signal from the mobo to the psu telling it to turn on, so when the xbox notices that you have pressed the power button on the front it puts 3.3V on the PowON line to tell the PSU to turn on. When the PSU is stable it ouputs 3.3V on the PowOK line to tell the mobo that the psu is working correctly and that the whole xbox can be turned on.

so does this mean that i can simply jump the 3.3v to the power_on pole? or maybe to both power_on and power_ok?

That looks like a cool idea. So u basically have a HDD and USB bay in the shape of a ps3 with a hot swappable 2.5" HDD. From what I can see the POWER OK is just to tell the xbox that the power is stable and safe to use. That would require some sort of IC on the xbox side probably. Maybe put a switch between the 3.3 stby voltage point and POWER ON. If u put a direct jumper there the psu would switch on as soon as u plug in a power cord, with a switch u can control when to turn it on. The only risk is if the power supply is unstable during 'warm up' which could potentially damage your HDDs because as soon as POWER ON is initiated, your HDDs would immediately receive their respective voltages.

Can you upload the pics? The links do not seem to be working....my PSU came from llama with a v.1.0 to 1.6 adaptor I can follow your images and schematics if u can give more detailed images or tell me exactly what pins u connected those components to via the 1.6 pin out map up there...how did u calculate what components u needed? Am I overliadibg the PSU with 3 hdds do u think?

oook... I dont get it but i cant see the pictures either...
you dont get what? My idea or his schematics/images?

What i am doing is converting stand-by 5v to 3.3 and putting it on PowOn telling the psu to turn on

PowON is a signal from the mobo to the psu telling it to turn on, so when the xbox notices that you have pressed the power button on the front it puts 3.3V on the PowON line to tell the PSU to turn on.
if you have a multimeter try and see if you can take the adapter off and probe the brown wire, if you have stand-by 3.3v then you dont need the resistors, just a jumper between that and PowOn

OK so let's take this a step further I was thinking about how to mimic the lights on the ps3 I want to use the WiFi light and HDD activity light locations on the shell both as HDD activity lights and would like to figure out how to mimic the power lights.... red on a ps3 = standby and blue = power on any suggestions how to do that? A relay or something? Wish I knew how the PS3 power button worked.....id try to make that of use as well.

If I had a ps3 I could be of more help, but I don't own one. I wouldn't think it to be to hard though, the LEDs probably work like the phat rol LEDs

Well if you are interested in the project I'll gladly have a power switch like it sent to you...I'm not great with all the technicalits of electronics currents and ratings and all that great stuff specially for a project like this.

Here is something I found on a quick Google:
