You know that Xbox Modding is the latest craze when:

I was low on supplies...

O.k, so I walk into the local Jaycar Electronics shop. I say to the guy, I want some of your AWG30 wire, and I'll take one of the finest tips you've got to suit my soldering Iron.

The guy walks over the a shelf, has a quick look then says to me...

"Do you want this fine enough to work on your Xbox?"

You can imagine the look on my face, as I notice a smug look appear on the sales guy!

Crazy Mate!!

First time I went to Radio Shack for some flux, the old guy reminded me to "Tin my wires, Xbox Motherboards can be ruined easy."

it is a laugh to hear about all the nightmares you guys go through to solder something. it just takes practice, and after ten years and the advances in electronics you get used to alot. lol

XBOX is a piece of cake.

LoL! Wow, XBox modding is REALLY widespread... now I know why Microsoft is pretty concerned (course, anybody who has seen too many of my posts also knows this I think they derserve it). I figured that, maybe, 1% of XBox owners modded their boxes, but it's much more then that! It's (apparently) not quite as popular in Missouri, or at least my part of it, but it looks really common in other places judging by your posts. That's awesome!

I guess I did kind of brush up against that as well. The first time I went to Radio Shack to buy my soldering supplies for my first mod job, I mentioned it was for use in my XBox, and the guy at the counter gave me this warning: "Hey, be careful. My friend f***ed up his motherboard when he was soldering on it." I'm just like, "Okay. I will. Just got to have a little care on the d0, but it shouldn't be hard. Hopefully." Luckily, everything WAS easy. But, getting back on point, I was still pretty surprised when he said that. I was thinking I would get an, "Oh." Thanks for the posts: those are awesome stories!

PS: You don't have to get into specifics, but where do you all live? Like, state-wise. You don't have to tell, but I'm curious just what sort of areas this hobby is popular in.

EDIT: Oh! Sorry to our friends in areas outside of the United States. If state is N.A., then what country?

Thanx for the advice tchild. Now I can't speak for anyone but myself... but i've never had an xbox Frag after install. I like to think my soldering skills are at least a notch above noob-ism :)

Like I said, i was just going in to the shop for more bit and pieces...

LinuxNoob: Glad you added your last comment, LOL ... I come from the land down under!

Meh, Microsoft can whine all they want about their precious systems being turned into monsters. But I'll I want to do with my XBOX is make it worth its money. Its a computer made to play games, so why not open it up to its full potential?

I may be one of the youngest kids registered on this site and to the forums that has had 3 successful mods with 0 failures [Not trying to gloat ;)]. If I can do it, anyone else can. The first time I picked up a soldering iron was when I soldered a Mod-Chip to the bulky grey Playstation....ahhh.....Modded Playstations....those were the days. I have yet to mess up on any type of mod-related console.

My part of Oz is pretty industrial so the local electronics store is unlikely to think anything more than just electronics hobbyist or repair when I go in to buy stuff.

Besides, although xbox modding is reasonably common here most of the people I know are too cheap to buy a chip and resort to softmodding instead. Though, as older boxes becomes less common that may change.

my point was look at all the probs, and the number of people with success. most of us continue to answer the same question over and over. instead we did some research first and continue to do successful mods. gl all

Couldn't agree more! The research done prior to even owning an Xbox has proved invaluable to me. Makes the experience that much more enjoyable when everything goes right first time!

I dont know how old you are, but I had just turned 13 when I did my first mod, and I had been soldering for about a year at that time.

I'm 18, been modding since I was 16. When I went to Maplins to buy the usual top-up of LED's, they asked if I was lighting up an XBOX 'cos they say they've had a lot of people buying stuff for their XBOX's.

Just today we had an electrician in fixing a electric door lock... he had a soldering iron that ran off propane. It would basically shoot a fire into the tip to heat it... it was the coolest thing!

I was asking him about it and he said "Yeah it's pretty cool but my son tried "crack" his xbox with it and almost fried the thing!"

I asked him what he did to crack it and he said "He got this chip off the internet (he didn't know what kind). Luckily his dad's an electrician, because it was a bitch to get in. You should get one!"

I almost laughed out loud. Instead I just thanked him for the advice... funny stuff!

I've modded 8 boxes so far... all ver 1.6 with the PCB board... it's weird but that's all I've seen so far... I think it's because all the boxes I've done have been new.

It takes me about 12 minutes to solder it and then I flash it and FTP all the stuff overnight. I give it back all wrapped up in the manufacturer's box... it's my little modus operandi... I'll get a pic of my next one... it's funny to see the xbox all wrapped up with that little xecuter lcd on the front... the way god intended!
