(Thx to rocket8080) Now that I know 360s have floating ground.

Would powering a 360 Hard Drive using PC power supply be unsafe?

The exact connection is as follows:

[PC PSU] ===== SATA-power cable ===== [Hard Drive] ===== SATA-data cable ===== [360 console]

Thank you in advance

That is some fast reply xD

I have to add that the PC would be powered by the same power supply and turned on, at the same time as the 360 console.

Is that because PC power supply has true ground? And so the connected 360 is true grounded as well?

I hear that voltage differences can fry stuff when 360 is connected to PC but not also to true ground.

it has been said about the possibility of frying your 360 if it not true grounded when connected to the pc, but have never had this happen to me or heard of it happening to others on the forums. The voltages are the same for the sata power. Why do you want to connect your hard drive like this for?

Better Performance :) 3.5" hard drive connected to data cable from inside 360 hard drive case, which is ofc plugged to the 360 hard drive port. Should yield much better speeds over lappy drives. (closer to 140mb/sec, SATA-1.5gbps cap)

I should have worded topic title better: PC power supply powering 3.5" 360 hard drive?

Just wondering if it safe to use an active PC's 12v PSU to power the 3.5" hard drive, whose data cable is fed to 360. PC is on and powered by same PSU at same time.

No the voltages are not the same between a 2.5" drive and a 3.5" drive. I assumed he would be using a adapter for the 2.5"

Mate ive got a 750gb 2.5" drive in my MS caddy ive had no probs at all with loading times, data transfer speed has never been a issue. Plus its easier to do and looks neat. Seriously doing that will make little if any noticable difference.

There is no difference in speeds between 3.5" and 2.5" drives. If you want to achieve better performance then get a drive that spins at a higher speed and has bigger cache memory (certainly not worth the extra money in my opinion for use with an xbox).

Suffice to say that my Samsung 5400RPM spinpoint 640gb 2.5" seem to perform and load faster than my stock 20gb and 120gb hard drives.

lol actually they both use 12v and 5v which you can see if you look at a molex connector, yellow is 12v the blacks are ground and the red is 5/5.5v :p

EDIT: oh and also, if your really concerned, why dont you just buy an energyzer cable and power your whole 360 from that power supply? rather than having two power supplys!
