If you install linux you can samba (Windows Network) to it.
Whats wrong with ftp'ing because it could be an all round network problem which wouldn't help samba...

Did you just want to look at files?

FlashFXP is an excellent FTP programme for your PC. It will time-out after a while, and you'll need to wait for the count-down timer to expire for FlashFXP to actually open. It's also a good program for accessing Xbox homebrew download sites (i.e. Xbins and XBMC).

I found that my favourite file manager & FTP client - Total Commander (ex Windows Commander) - works just fine. If you want to try it, get yourself a copy (shareware) from http://www.ghisler.com/

Post your network settings!

PC settings, Xbox settings.

Unless you've configured your router away from it's default settings, it probably issues IP addresses to nodes that connect to it. Is your Xbox set for DHCP - it will need to be in order for your router to issue it with an address. Same goes for your PC.

I assume that you probably have broadband access through your router already, so your PC will probably be set already to 'obtain an IP address automatically'. Then again, maybe not! Again, post your network settings!
