I had a Phillips drive in my 1.5 Xbox before I replaced it with a Samsung. The Phillips was absolutely horrible. I had a hard time reading most of my backups. It didn't seem to matter which brand of media I used either. The Samsungs have been awesome. Most of them read just about any DVD+R and CD-RW, although I have seen some that are a little bit more picky about the media. I have experience with 2 Thompson drives. One wouldn't read anything but DVD-R and the other worked with most DVD+R and CD-RW. IMO, Samsung is the best, followed by Thompson and Phillips is at the bottom.

I have a thompson, and despite all the negative things people say about it, it has read all CD-RWs, and DVD-Rs i have thrown at it. so i think its a decent drive, but i do think it is a little noisy... or that just may be something else? :(

well obviously the general word is SAMSUNG is definately the best with philips being a close second and thomson is definately the worst.

i had a thomson in my xbox and it was a peice of crap as it pretty much died on me... it would read old games but new games it would not read... but it read the cd-rw disks i made when i first initially moded the xbox and flashed the bios... now i have a philips drive in the xbox now that a freind gave to me... and so far this drive works good... odds are it will last a pretty long time since i dont use it much at all now that the xbox is moded with a 80GB hdd... all it's really used for is copying in xbox games into the hdd.

Without any modding of the drive........ Well the only other drive I had was a thompson and it broke... But my modded samsung 616t is great. My friend has a samsung, the new 1.6 ones, and it reads everything but cd-r.

I saw a hitatchi xbox dvd drive for sale, pricey, does it work with all xbox versions? or only 1.6's?

Also, the Thompson drives are the only drives that give me copy errors when backing up games to HD. I haven't gotten errors with ANY of the other drives.

I have a Philips and a Thompson drive and have no problems with either other than having to replace the laser on the Thompson as it was faulty when I got it lol. I'd have to say I don't think its much of an issue which drive you have if you leave your xbox's plugged into a router like I do. The advantage of the Samsung drive is exagerated when it comes to a modded xbox in my opinion TBH even if it is rated the best drive.

Really? I never really had a hard time with CD-R's (never got to try burned DVD's in it). I tried the pot method and it didn't do anything for me. Hell, I ****ed over the lens and had to buy a new one. I honestly would not refer anyone to do that.

I honestly think there are two different types of Philips drives. Mine, that came in a 1.6, isn't like the older ones. The internals are laid out differently, and the bottom of the chassis makes a huge dip so that it wouldn't fit in a PC drive bay unless it had complete clearance underneath it.

Anyway, it plays just about anything I give it.

Yea I have that huge dip as well. I thought it was odd how they put that in there, but I wasn't gonna argue with it, it works :p

You've got it in a 1.0 though? That's weird. I've done some friends boxes, and found the dip-less Philips in 1.2 and 1.4 in there, so I thought the dip was a new type of drive for 1.6 or something.
