Hello, i would like to know if this tutorial:

http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/xlive-safe1.php

applies to the x3? I would like to play online still and I am not quite sure how to go about it. My 80gb maxtor hard drive is lockable but i have not yet locked it. I'm using the 1959 bios and i have evox 3935 installed. Also, theres a problem with my ms dashboard that when i try to load straight into it (hold down power on start up) i get an error saying xbox needs service. When i try to switch to the ms dash from inside evox i get error 21? Sorry for the noobish questions, any input will be appreciated, thanks ahead of time.

first off you cannot get to msdash without a locked hard drive. heres what you need to do
1. boot into x3 bios
2. lock the hdd
3. power off the system completly
4. power on the system by holding the power button for longer than a second.
5. enjoy playing on live.
NOTE: If you have already gone on live with your stock hdd you will be banned if you go on with an upgraded one. no matter if you make a new account or not.

That is not good to hear... i was under the impression i could play on live if i cancelled my account and created a new one while on the new locked hard drive? So if i want to play on live i need to put the OEM drive back in and go from there?

as far as i know. the problem is the first time you log in it mates your eeprom and hdd serial number. so if you go on again with the same eeprom and different hdd serial number it will ban you for changing hardware. so if you never logged in on your box when it was stock, you can put a chip and a new hdd in and then get on live and be fine... as long as you don't change hdd again.

but this is what i did...

i had my account created when i got the xbox... so my old eeprom and my stock HDD serial have been logged...

I wanted to change HDD so i bought a 160 gb maxtor and i changed my eeprom in the same time... and i did an account recovery...

How does XBL knows that i have changed my HDD and not bought a new xbox that I just recoved my account????

I still can login into live although i havent tried Halo 2 yet which seems to be the problem of many people....

It doesn't. If you replace the eeprom when you upgrade the hard drive then your good to go.

Also, I wanted to point out. In that link you posted it says to rename files.
NEVER, EVER, rename files on your xbox. It's not necessary anymore with the newer version bios's that are out now.

That tutorial is old and outdated.

Any ideas on how far back they started logging? I originally signed up over a year ago with my unmodded xbox, have since modded and was playing on live quite a bit. Haven't been on in a few weeks and am now waiting to sort this new banning out. I do remember a few months ago live did a bunch of auto updates and I'm wondering if that is when the info logging was done? Or was it during the original sign up regardless of how long ago? If it was a recent event then my new hdd was logged, if it was from way back then the stock hdd was logged, just trying to figure out which hdd to boot from for live.

Is it even possible to go on live with an unlocked HDD...I bought a new HDD, installed slayers and tried to boot with the mod chip off (forgot to lock) MSDash doesn't boot... Locked HDD with config magic...it booted fine, been playing on live for a couple days :p

Jake-

btw, the flag gamer tags after you have been banned once, so doing an acct recover is risky...I got banned cuz of that once already-

No it is not possible, as far as I know, to go on live with an unlocked HDD. Because the ms dash gets pissed if it is unlocked and there for you wouldn't be able to get on legitly. Evox and all those don't care if the hard drive is unlocked, but try and get on with your chip on and you'll get banned. So I don't think it is possible.

Yes you can play with a modchip. Yes you have to turn it off. You must get the xbox completely modded before signing up for live. I.E. Put the new hdd in, put the chip in, and make any other hard ware changes first. Then you can sign up for live.

Since you are on the topic of live and banning.

I have not officially signed up with live. When I first got it, I plugged it in, when through the inital signup screens, but did not actually sign up for an account. I think it did download an update though.

Would they have mated my hdd and eprom by just doing that or do you actually have to sign up and be on live for that to happen?

Depends on if you did that before or after they started the banning based on the marriage thing.

I really have no idea. I can't remember when I did that. I got my xbox about a month or two ago.

Why not create a dual boot environment for your Xbox if you are that concerned with losing your Xbox Live service?

I created a DPDT switch and currently working on a 3 device IDE cable.
(fyi, you can buy them for under $5 rather than paying $35 at your local electronics shop.)

Being able to switch between your original xbox HD and your modded HD seems like the best way to go when wanting to avoid being ejected from the service.

Buy a Customized 120GB HD from systemmods, already has the original Xbox structure on it, so you dont have to even touch your original HD to get those files.

Formatting and installing dash files isn't a problem at all. All you need, to be quick and noobish, is Slayer's or Deluxe Auto Installer. You could always buy a new eeprom.

Just to let you all know my daughter went on to xbox live and created a new account, then she played Halo2 with the executer chip turned off and she got banned.

The chip was deffinately off at the time.
Will she need a new EEPROM now?
