okay...so i bought a new v1.6 mobo on ebay...one that had a proper pinheader for the x3 already soldered...the lpc was rebuilt...and the guy even soldered a short wire to the d0 so i wouldn't have to solder directly to the board...when it arrived...i tested it stock...works perfectly stock...so i solder the alt 5v wire to that chip...i also soldered the d0 wire the hdd led wire and the lan led wire...both lights come up on the x3...the 3 v and the 5v that is...anyways after much d**king around with the chip...getting it to seat right...i flash the x3 plus bios and voila! configlive!...however...after about 10-30 seconds...the screen goes blank...and the xbox eject led flashes amber and then poof it shuts off (the xbox) it seems almost as if it's overheating...and shuts down to prevent the pentium from melting...any ideas gentlemen?

ah...one othe thing...the xbox fan is whirring WAY louder than normal...it seems to be spinning much much faster than normal...also the less time i give it between bootups...the quicker i get flashing amber and then xbox shutdown...this definately seems like overheating...any ideas?

okay so I'm convinced it's overheating...my reasons are the following: the heatsink on the cpu does not get warm no matter how long the box frags...and when i flipped the black part of the heatsink bracket up...sure enuff...the heatsink was loose...so i removed the bracket...cleaned the sink...and the processor die with 99% isopropyl alcohol...applied new thermal paste...and cinched everything back down tight...unfortunately i must wait for the grease to cure before i can expect any results...till then...i rest...tomorrow i will be giving detailed updates as to whether or not this fixed my problem...and if not then i need ideas please...thanx especially redneck...i very much enjoy any feedback on my probs whatsoever...and for that I thank you...goodnight

Can you boot Cromwell and try flashing the bios again with a different file just incase its a corrupt bios problem.

See what other people say in that case but its looking like soldering in that case.

You have all the answers so you figure it out.

On a less defensive note, why would it suddenly stop working after you soldered something to the motherboard, gee wiz whats the common factor here, it worked before and now it doesn't. Rather than wait for days for somebody else to say the same I'd try to resolder or at least test the points with a multi-meter.

do you have the same issue with the chip pulled off of the pin header and booting into m$ dash normally

umm, a papertowel? Either it comes off with a little elbow grease, or it never comes off. Some compounds fuse the chip and the heatsink for-ev-er, but minus that, I've always been able to just rub the stuff off with a thick shop-type paper towl or rag of some kind.

It seems really strange that the machine overheats while idleing like that. The chip reaches pretty hot temps very fast, and if you are just idleing, it should level out around as hot as its going to get within seconds. Have you tried increasing your fan speed, and running with the top off to help circulate air.
