No, it is not currently possible to play your "backed up" games on xbox live. xbox live will ban you if you sign on with your mod chip enabled, and that would be the only way you could launch a game off your hdd. But maybe someday...

I have noticed though that sometimes while playing a backed up game the xecuter led would turn red as if modchip was disabled. what could be the cause of that?

The most likely cause is a bad solder joint on one of the power connections (ie ground, +3.3v, or +5v) which may only be affected as the temperature inside the case increases or with the vibration from one of the moving components within the box, whereby the bios believes that the xbox booted without it, so the bios reflects that condition with red indicator lights on the panel.

Xbox 360 Hard Mod/Homebrew

So, my goal is to be able to play backups directly from the hard drive. I want to buy my friend's 360 w/a broken DVD drive, so I can't simply flash the drive and play burnt backups. I also don't have a dual layer burner, so that is a problem as well.

I want to buy a mod chip that will allow homebrew and a backup launcher... After countless hours of searching it seems like only jtagable 360's can run homebrew? This seems like it's only true as far as soft mods go.. but there HAS to be a mod chip that I can solder in!!! I can't find it anywhere and I'm running out of time to buy his 360. I'm not going to buy his 360 if I need to buy a burner anyways, because in that case I'll just buy an external DVD drive, flash that one, and hook it up to my current 360 every time I want to play backups.

Any help is greatly appreciated in advance!

So is there any use to the 360 w/no working DVD drive?

Also, is there no other way to play games straight from HDD? I really don't want to buy a dual-layer burner and media.

Chances are you can't even jtag his xbox anyway!

The dashboard version has to be 7371 or lower..do you know the dashboard version?

Also, look up the nand-x, maybe that is what you are looking for? That's what I use for jtagging, but like always, only on boards 7371 or lower!

I doubt it, it has an HDMI port. I just imagined there would be a hardware mod chip that would allow for custom code to run and do the same thing as jtag...
