Yup its the ribbon cable.Next time try on/off and eject before you put the xbox back together.

When it powers off, does the xbox brick show red?

So many times I see this problem. Its nearly always the same problem.

Assuming the ribbon is installed the correct way round check along the ribbon near the top of the 360. A lot of people stick screwdrivers into the top of the 360 looking for the release tabs and scratch the cable slightly. The cable contains a very thin trace of conductive material and it only takes the slightest scratch to penetrate it and kill it.

If you want to know for sure disconnect the cable completely and use your controller for on/off/eject duties for a few days if its not powering off then there is your problem.
