I have motherboard A8N-SLI Deluxe, which has NF4 chipset.
I am running on Win xp 64. I have successfully turned the DVD drive into mode B and it even detected the dvd movie I put in. But when I tried to dump firmware into my C:\, maximus 3.0 just froze on me. I connect my C: drive via SATA too, is that the reason? Or should I get VIA SATA card? I am really frustrated now  Thanks for the help.

I dont know how well, if at all, firmware toolbox will work on 64-bit xp. That may be your issue right there. If you are getting your drive into modeB and detected in windows without a problem, it probably isnt your sata chipset. You could try updating your drivers (if there is an update) and see if that helps.

I would not trust xp64 with a poo laden stick lol but like you said your best bet is 32 bit windows XP plus when you extract etc your firmware kit do it to the root of drive C:

i.e

C:\firmware i.e make a new folder

i had the same problem but with slax 2.1, v2.0 just goes to a black screen with the NF4, I ended up using a mates PC with no SATA onbaord using the VIA6421a SATA card and Windows XP 32bit, and everything worked perfectly first time.

I have reinstalled windows xp 32bit on the same computer, and the same problem occurs. so I guess it's not windows' problem. Maybe it's my computer

I got the same problem. Mine is v78. I use VIA VT6421A Raid PCI/SATA card. The program freezes everytime I try to dump the original firmware.

Maybe I should get a non-Raid PCI card?
