Optiarc DVD RW AD-5280S 1.Z8 (ATA)
Current Profile: DVD+R DL

Disc Information:
Status: Empty
State of Last Session: Empty
Erasable: No
Free Sectors: 4,173,824
Free Space: 8,547,991,552 bytes
Free Time: 927:32:74 (MM:SS:FF)
Why does Imgburn say that the blank DVD+R DLhas only 8,547,991,552 bytes? I thought I wouldn't need payload tool with SonyOptiarc? When I click the write button, I get a message saying:

There doesn't appear to be enough space on the disc to burn this image.

Image size: 4,267,015 Sectors (8,334 MiB)
Disc size: 4,173,824 Sectors (8,152 MiB)

Would you like me to try sending the BurnerMAX Payload?

Note: Even if successful, there's no guarantee your drive will cope with overburning the disc!
I never got these error messages when I used cheap dual layer DVDs for burning but now Verbatim is giving this error? Why?

You got the wrong type of verbatim disc. Unless u are showing the wrong link. They should be 8x 8.5gb verbs. Made in UAE or Singapore are best.

Wrong type of Verbatim discs? The cover says they're 8.5 GB and 8x. How do I know they're wrong? Usually people use the "use verbs only" argument only when a user complains about burning errors or quality issues.

Surely there's another explanation? When I was using cheap discs I never got this error and Imgburn identified the free size on the disc correctly...

I purchased these: http://www.snapdeal.com/product/verbatim-dvdr-dl-85gb-8x/57009#bcrumbSearch:Verbatim DVD+R DL

If you read the comments, you'll see that they've been said to be appropriate for XGD3 burning.

Now, I know that Singapore and UAE made Verb's are required for the BEST QUALITY. But c'mon, just because the Verbs are made in India, it doesn't mean Imgburn should understate the amount of free memory.

When I see the blank DVD on 'File Explorer, it says "7.96 GB" is free. When I used Memorex and local/cheap DVDs Imgburn shows the correct amount of memory. I've heard of people getting successful burns on Memorex, please don't tell me that it isn't possible with Verb's made in India...

I'm relieved to hear you say that. That's what I thought too.

If there's any sure way to find out, I'm up for it...

I was directed to buy this drive from eBay from a person on the ixtreme forums who had already bought the same one and was using it successfully to burn drives.

Well, I got mine from eBay but the listing has been removed now so it's not possible to view the product. The carton in which it came says 5280-CB-PLUS so I'm pretty sure it's a PLUS version. And it's got the exact same software CD and wire as shown on the newegg image.

EDIT: But the point is, if it WASN"T the PLUS version, then it wouldn't show the free size of the memorex/cheap discs correctly.

The problem is, that even if I test burn one of these discs, I'll render them non-returnable...

I checked for updates using Imgburn but there weren't any updates. Btw, on Imgburn if you go to Tools -> Drive -> Check for Firmware Updates what current firmware version does the pop-up box say you have?

Would it be sensible to click the 'Overburn' button and hope that the Optiarc does its magic when Imgburn asks me to overburn or truncate?

But how can you say that the issue is with the discs? I would've agreed if there was an error in the middle of the burning process, but all DVD+R DLs are supposed to show the appropriate size on Imgburn...

Well I tried to burn an image onto the disc and got an error at 42%. Took out the second blank disc from the batch and inserted it into the drive.

Guess what, Imgburn now shows the free size it's supposed to show. The image is burning and is at 90% right now with no errors so far. Hopefully it'll be successful.

So I guess the first disc was a faulty one?

Just wanted to provide an update. Burned Battlefield Hardline (the first disc) successfully. Will burn the second one and then see if it installs properly on my Xbox 360. Thanks for your help :)
