Problem with quick launch buttons

Guys,
I have a 250gb slim RGH dual nand system. Ive just been getting to grips with it and tried to edit the launch.ini so it will boot (by default) to the regular dash but by either pressing Y or X it will boot to FSD or XEXmenu. I edited the launch config exactly as i found on a tutorial and checked the paths leading to both the default.xex of FSD and default.xex of the XEXmenu (bearing in mind the FSD path used to be default boot and worked fine before i edited the config)
Is there anything else i should be trying to press? I just put to RGH and wait for it to boot and then either press either Y or X but nothing.

Sorry, should also have mentioned im running everything off external usb drive.

When i want my alternate dash to boot, i press the relevent button as the machine is booting, as in when the green swirls appear before the xbox logo is there.

You want to boot to NXE?
Default = (Leave Blank)

You need to hold RB when the console boots in order to load NXE/Metro.

Thanks for the replies guys, yes, default = NXE (blank)

BUT_X = usb:\Applications\Freestyle 2\default.xex
BUT_Y = usb:\Applications\XeXMenu\default.xex

When i try and press one of the buttons it seems like the controller barely has time to register so is the time window very short?

Also if i press the xbox button and goto home and then press the X button it boots into xexmenu fine. However if i reboot the console and hold down RB and then X it wont. It must be the way im pressing the buttons
