Yes I'm a n00b but before I get flamed I have read the guides and all posts associated with this error, but nothing has yet hit the spot as to my own circumstances.
I will explain the problem as fully as possible for any one who may take pity on me!
My XBOX and chip are as follows:
v1.4 XBOX
X3 chip
Flash protect set to off
Now, I had this all working merrily on the following setup
X3 3029 bios on the bank:
on on off off off
When I received the XBOX the flashbios functionality had been setup as follows (for extra security I suppose):
I could get to flashbios (v.3.0.3) on the following bank:
off on off off off
And as a backup v3.0.1 was available via eject&power too.
I did all my flashing in the past via 3.0.3 and never had any problems (eg. I upgraded from a X2 bios to the X3 3029 bios upon getting the XBOX).
Now, I thought to myself, I'll upgrade the BIOS again to the latest version of X3 (3294). Grabbed the BIOS from the reputation location.
So I flipped my switches to off on off off off to give me access to my flashbios v.3.0.3 screen.
I then flashed the bios (via CD-RW), but forgot to change the switches before flashing.
Hence I overwrote where I had flashbios v.3.0.3 on the bank.
Not a problem in theory.
But then when I booted back up I found problems with the 3294 bios - it went to the x3cl "dash" screen but wouldn't load games (kept going straight to the x3 cl dash when reset with a CD in).
I know others who have had strange probs with the 3294 bios and have reset to ealier versions which will work. I just wanted to see if I could get it to run.
So I thought "f**k it" I'll put 3029 back on then. Nevermind I've deleted the 3.0.3 flashbios I had on off on off off off, I can get to 3.0.1 flash util via eject&power.
So I hit this and went into the backup flash facility. This time I was careful to make sure I changed the bank settings correctly before flashing (to on on off off off) via CD-RW.
However, the flash f**ked up as I tried to do it. XBOX just hung indefinitely part way through the load. I was forced to power down and start again. Now the XBOX just frags on all banks (except one - see below).
Now I always get flash halting errors when I try to reflash.
This is what I see when I first power up via eject&power - does it give some clues?
Video encoder detected: focus
Flash type: (Read only ???) manf 0xEB dev 0xxF6
Boot: start USB init
(the "Read only ????" bit only appears here sometimes, most times I just get the manf 0xEB ... bit)
Then it gives you the flash options.
Now I've read all about flash protection being an obvious problem, but I don't see how this can be the case. I've flashed bioses in the past no problems, so it can't be protected or else it wouldn't have flashed in the past, would it? (eg. when I upgraded from an X2 to the X3 3029 bios).
By the grace of God I can access an X2 bios that has stayed resident on one of the 512 banks (on off on off off) - this is the only bank now that does not FRAG!
Now I'd like to get my old X3 bios back on here, but don't want to f**k it up any more, losing access to one bank (w/X2 bios) that will still load games etc.
I've read several threads where people seem to get f**ked at this stage when they can't flash to any banks. I'm lucky that I still have access to that one working bank.
Any suggestions anyone?
If I keep trying to flash to other banks (receiving the flash halting error) can I be sure that the one working bank (on off on off off) will not be overwritten?
