okay, i have a 1.0 xbox, and decided to de-solder the pin header area, so i could do the pin header installation. installed the 3 lead wires (LAN, HDD, D0), put the power switch PCB in place, and connected, hooked up my pro switch and installed that.

take it downstairs and turn it on, success! it boots up, so i turn it off so i can put the box back together and everything will be grand... or so i thought.

after trying to reboot, i kept starting/restarting twice, then the third time a frag. i figure "okay, so my pin header was bollocked, ill recheck and whatnot"... or so i thought. i did this (futzing with the pin header) about 6 times.

every boot, did the same 2 start/restars then frag. only the 5v light is coming on on my chip. so i look at pins 9 and 15, solder them better (i thought it already looked good, but i redid it just to be sure)... and nothing changed after doing that 4 times or so.

so finally, i decided to remove the pin header (desoldered each pin and pulled it out; cant use the pin header piece anymore). and installed the wire harness, everything is connected as it should be... or so i thought.

after all of that im still not getting the 3.3v light!

i am stumped, pissed, and am heading to be because i have an early day tomorrow.

i checked the forums, as did my friend for possible issues... but after redoing everything 10 times im not thinking its my soldering job anymore. i am using the correct solder .038 rosin cored and a 15w iron.

please help... i beg of you... or, if there is anyone in the seattle area wanting to do an installation, i'd be willing to pay you for your services.

thanks alot,

fretster

Wow, looks like it got a little HOT there?!?!

you melted the chip next to the d0! and it looks like it's shorting against the pad next to it!!

holy hot solder batman!

clean that d0 up. careful not to lift the pad.
the rest look pretty decent. check for some solder splashes around them though.

but maybe it's a lost cause, that chip next to the d0 looks melted.

your d0 botch job actually makes me cringe when i look at it.

i dont mean to be mean to you man...

i dont understand how so many people can totally f**k theit mobo's,
use a very low power iron, and pay attention... i've seen so many melted mobo's on here it's not even funny anymore.

Just looking at your Pin Header install I can see a couple of cold/dry joints. A good solder joint should be very shiny and look like a volcano. Not just a round, dull blob.

Did you use flux when installing anything? If you end up resoldering I def reccommend using flux.

And yea that chip thing your talking about. Isnt that just the rubber piece they put around each part of the mobo that screws to the bottom of the box?

yeah thats not a chip, its just a small rubber pad thing, looks sorta like electrical tape. i dont think i have any flux, i have some tinner though and i used that before soldering each part.

so i should...

get flux
clean up d0
redo the wire harness install

is that correct?

thanks alot for your replies.

Good Lord fret!

Remember last night I said “clean and shiny”? This is not clean and shiny. Head out to Radio Shack and get a tin of Flux and while you’re out grab some isopropyl alcohol to clean up.

Did you connect everything back together? If you have a volt meter try testign teh poser supply. Makes shure the video plug is in or else it will frag. That happend to me the first time i tried it out the vid cord want in all the way to the error message i couldent see came up / frag.

so the video cord has to be plugged in or the 3.3v wont light up?

I have to agree with naoneo, it looks to me like you're bridging D0 with another line... That would probably cause a problem to say the least. If nothing else, i'd at least check it out......

I'm in the process of putting an X3 in a 1.6 myself so i know how hard that damn D0 is.

I'm stuck in a 3rd world country (in the US military) who don't know what flux or tinning is.......... So basically i'm using some CRAP solder i bought locally with a soldering iron i also bought locally. The soldering iron doesn't even have a voltage select, and it's 220........so god only knows what wattage it's using.[/quote]
