Hi. I have flashed about 50 xbox 360 with about 10 of them being slims. Always success. I recently purchased a 9504 board from ebay for a friend who has a bad drive.(he messed it up pulling epoxy off) I have his key and ofw from the original drive which is a 0225. I tried google and of course jf., but I cannot read or write to the 9504. Jf shows it is a 9504 not the updated 0272. I tried slim key and slim unlock instructions from jf. tried to follow unlock for 0225 nothing. I even tried putting the pcb into the drive and updating to the new dash, but the update fails with error code. The pcb will go into vendor mode but states the spi is locked will not read or write. Any advice?

I had the exact same problem with the same drive just last week. I had to do the kamikaze to it in order to even read the FW from the drive..
After drilling and unlocking it read no problems, then updated and locked it again, drive has been working like a charm
as far as I know the kamikaze is done after you read the drive key...how did you go about the kamikaze for this...I have done about 5 kamikaze on 0225 before, but only after I read the drive key. I will get the jf log up soon. not at my flashing pc.

You can read the key before or after. The reason they tell u to read it before is if u drill to deep u take a chance locking it up and not being able to get the key off
Thanks guys. I just realized what I was doing wrong. I was caught up trying to read the drive when I didn't need to. I was just following the tutorial in jf step by step. Truth is of course, since I already have the key I need I just needed to skip to the unlocking pcb part of jf. I can't believe I spent so much time on this simple problem. Thanks so much to you guys for all your help.
