I've already got a slim, but I want to get another Xbox to use as an media extender in another room. I also would like to flash the drive in that box as well. I'm looking around eBay and was wondering what to go for, a phat or slim. From what I've read the slim are a lot harder to flash, so I was thinking of getting a phat with a Jasper board. Any suggestions?

A galaxy far far away....
you would pay upwards of $100 on ebay for a working console and not know the history or it, anyone can take an rrod and heat it up with a griddle and heatgun, repairing it long enough to take your cash.

tbh id go for another slim as its less likely to go rrod tits up in a few months and i just think they are much more pleasantly designed. that said i have all the gear and experience to flash it any time i need if you dont a phat might be better, that said even for flashing a phat i would recommend buying all the gear, ie. probe 3, ck3 and usb pro. its expensive if you are going to use it once but you wont because the way things are going now there are regular ms updates and regular fw updates.

do what i did when i was first starting get a few mates to chip in for the gear on the agreement you will flash their xboxes for them and also any updates in the future in return for their donation.:D

let the stuff pay for itself haha

Thanks for the suggestion. I see your point on the slim, that's what I was thinking too but didn't the newest Dashboard update lock the firmware on some the slim drives? It also sounded like you could do a hardware workaround, but seeing as it's my first I was hoping not to have to mod the hardware.

aye once you accept the latest dash it will lock the spi on all 9504 drives after changing the fw to 0272 (the others were already locked anyway. you can do the kamikaze hack for winbond chips or the sputnik hack for MXIC. although both are risky if you are not experienced/confident.

other than that you could get an unlocked tx pcb for slim which is easy but im not sure if you can still get them or if they have discontinued them

Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like I'll stop the cheap Jasper search and go for the cheap 4 GB slim search. Thanks all.
