Putting the Cromwell bios on the backup bank.

Hey...

I installed the X3 recently. etc using the 1mb X3 1959 bios image. So basically I have the following config.

Quick Power Press - X3 bios /w EvoX
Long Power Press - MS bios /w MS 5960 Dash

Now, what I want to do is flash a Cromwell 256k bios image onto the backup bank so I could boot Linux independently.

So in all:

Quick Power Press - X3 bios /w EvoX
Long Power Press - MS bios /w MS 5960 Dash
Power /w Eject Press - Cromwell bios /w Linux

I just need to proper switch config so I don't mess up the X3 bios 1m image when I flash the 256kb Cromwell image.

Anybody have some quick tips on this type of config?

Your backup BIOS is just that, a backup. Don’t use it on a regular basis, but if you want to update it with the latest FlashBIOS, go for it.

For Linux just use one of the other banks (you still have banks 5,6,7,8 free) to run a different BIOS other than your X3 if that’s what you want. Set your switches accordingly:

Is it a no, no to use the back up boot on a regular basis?

I understand what you are saying, using a another 256k bank instead.

Basically, I just liked the idea of having the three button combo's to boot each bios.

I'm still a little new to the bios config on the xbox. If I put the cromwell bios on another bank, how do I boot from it or will I be forced to used config live to boot from it?

Also I just visited xbox-linux and they have a cromwell xecutable now. I might use that instead.

I understand how the combo would be nice, but I would recommend maybe getting yourself the Pro Switch so you don’t have to fiddle with the tiny little dip switches on the standard switch.

Let’s say you want to use that 256k BIOS instead of booting to the X3 BIOS. Flash it to bank 5 (pro settings = on on off on) power up and that BIOS loads. Then to use the X3 BIOS all you have to do is tap that last switch back into the “off” setting, then it boots into X3 in the standard on on off off setting. All it takes is toggling on or off one little switch/button on the Pro Switch mounted in the front of the box, then turning it on.
