If a piece of news stating that there is no further news on something falls down in the woods, does it make a sound? Forgive that opening, but id Software's massive Quakecon gathering took place this weekend yet frustratingly, not much was given away about the fate of the long awaited Doom 4. According to VG24/7, during the Q&A portion of John Carmack's talk at the event, he was questioned on Doom 4 which has long been in development hell. Carmack responded by claiming he had asked Zenimax - the current parent company of id Software - if he could say anything about the development of the game. Sadly: "the answer was no, I couldn't."
If it's any consolation, Joystiq spoke to id co-founder Tim Willits about the fate of the Rage series, with Willits stating he was "proud of what we did, I'm proud of the universe that we built. The franchise is not dead" and that lessons learned in developing the game would be transferable to developing to next generation consoles like the Xbox One: "we're adding stuff into it based on the new consoles, and it's allowed people to make different games because the technology is flexible and robust and works on everything"
So is Doom 4 the secret project id was working on after all? Looks like we've still got a bit of a wait to find out. Are you still looking forward to Doom 4 or should the developers at id Software focus their efforts elsewhere? Let us know in the comments.
