After installing an X3 chip and using my Xbox as a media device is the modded Xbox a viable solution to watching DVD movies? I am hoping that the sound and video quality are up to par with the high end DVD players. Thanks for any replies.

Look around for XBMC - Xbox Media Center. A lot of people use it as a dashboard (which it does a good job at), but its real strength is as a media player (DVD, MP3, etc).

Yeah it's pretty good, I use XBMC with a scart video lead (RGB) and optical output from the xbox for Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, which works just as well for games as movies :)

only problem with XBMC is it doesn't read dvd menus. You are stuck navigating the .vob files. And on a sidenote, click the link in my signature for a scene from the movie dodgeball.

true, actually I use XBMC to watch my divx files, and DVDX2 / Avalaunch to watch DVDs.

EDIT:
I think your sig is screwing up the thread a tad

It does play img files however, so you do not have to keep selecting the new "vob" file. I have not tried to include the menu in the img, as I am just want the movie to start and skip all of the crap.

The video and sound quality are in my opinion 99% as good as watching it on your computer if you are talking about divx or avi files!! I haven't watched a dvd in it yet because I have a dvd player for that function... Another nice feature is that you can resize the picture to make it look a little more aestetically pleasing!! Some people like widescreen..ie...me....some people like full screen... When you strech the widescreen to fullscreen it makes it slightly choppy though...
