over the last few days i notice she's running pretty hot(she=Xbox).Especially the underside. O.k Fine that goes without say of course.
Touching the side of the power connection underneath it is still warm even though it has not been on all day.Now I put A thermometer under there it is at 80F and it's NOT even plugged into the wall. IS THIS NORMAL?? OR CAUSE FOR CONCERN?????

I just noticed something else
my DSL modem router cordless phone and cell phone all have the BIG FAT PLUGS a upposed to the regular ones. Now thw fat plug is nothing more than a transformer to control voltage right? And if I touch any one of them they too are pretty warm to the touch.
So this begs the question, Is the little power ciruit board also some type of transformer? If so wouldn't this be A probable explanation of the heat issue?
OR should I still be worried?

also I've just unplugged it from the power bar and am now watching the temp on the thermometer I'll keep youposted. If the temp doesn't drop then you know I'm FUBAR

Like all PCs, the Xbox runs on 12VDC and 5VDC.

You are correct in saying that the power board is a transformer - it takes 110/240VAC (depending on where you live) and converts it into appropriate DC voltages (and currents). Inside these transformers are part that need to disipate a lot of heat (converting energy to heat is one way of removing energy (watts) from a system) - and this is part of the conversion process from AC to DC.

The only real difference between the wall wart transformers and a PSU is the output, and the number of watts the PSU is going to supply. More watts generally equates to larger power supplies.

These thing are going to get hot.

I'd be more concerned if they were running cold.

HOLY CRAP!!!! great straight forward explanation Thank you very very much but one thing It's normal for it to be warm even though it is not on and running? I'm assuming it is but again thanx for the post GOOD ONE

The only time you don't have power running through it is when the thing is unplugged from the wall. A computer PSU can be physically turned off, but my understanding is that the Xbox is alway essentially in a standby mode - notice that the switch doesn't connect directly to the power supply? It relies on closing a circuit, and waking up the xbox, rather than starting it cold. While it is "off" (in standby), the power consumption is basically nothing, but it will still stay a little warm.

Electronics are happy when they stay warm..Not HOT just warm!! Keeps em stable and un-stressed!
Back in the dim dark days of IBM PS/2 Model xx boxes (old school 486/586 based machines with Microchannel buses :)) we periodically got computers out in the steel plant just "fail" during winter. Guys would come in, flick their machines on, and the thermal shock from the sudden heating of the frigid computer would crack the CPU. The ended up leaving them on over winter - once we explained that leaving it one used about as much electricity as leaving a 60W lightbulb burning (and that was cheaper than buy AU$6000 PC every 12 months) they cottoned onto the idea.

We had a Tri-Star air-to-air refuelling tanker in Bahrain a few years ago that had a 100% serviceability record for over 2 months..This had never been achieved before and it was due to the fact that the engineers NEVER switched it off. Yes, they shut down the engines after every flight but they rigged it up to a ground power set and keps all of the avionics switched on 24/7.

Sorry...Bit off topic but you get the point of why manufacturers do this..
