question regarding usb hard drives.

a while back l made posts about what l believe is my hard drive dying. however lm assuming there could be other possibilities that could cause the error relating to a possibly dead drive.

that said lve been thinking of getting a new drive but rather than fitting it into the xbox caddy that attaches to my Phat console lve been contemplating getting an external drive which would save allot of time with regards to copying extracted games since ld just be able to connect it to my laptop/PC after extracting and just pop it over that way.

now lm assuming l'll have to have something formatted for title updates to be downloaded to which means the drive may have to be formatted for xbox usage and l'll definitely have to point the launch.ini to the drive where l will install the dash. however lm just curious as to if it would cause problems if l used some kind of mini-usb hub. or splitter to allow me to split my rear usb into 2.. reason l ask is while l use wired controllers so it could cause issues when playing 2 player and since l want to be able to use the wireless adapter it kind of leaves some issues as to where l am able to plug an external in if the issue with my drive is actually is actually a hardware issue that has nothing to do with the drive as lve scanned the drive with a few drive testing tools and so far found no issues with it and considering all the original issues lve had with getting an RGH'd xbox ld rather not keep on sending the xbox away especially seeing as lve not the cash to keep on doing it.

also is there a size limit to drives that can be used ?

title updates, & DLC can only go into a caddy based internal drive, best to have both drives for an RGH console

install your FSD on the internal and use the external for ripping your games. both drives can be any size you want. invest in wireless controllers also.

no need to even use the PC, insert your original disc and rip it to the external directly using the xbox itself in FSD. downloaded ISO's are a big NO NO

actually while most of my games are in ISO format, they are my own games. to save time l tend to rip all my games and have them backed up in ISO format which is something l did back when l only had a flashed console.. that way l could burn to disk and my originals wouldnt get scratched when l used them. l just kept the habit going after l got an RGH console.

that said, l remembered l have a couple of spare 20gb xbox drives l could try, but if the problem is related to the actual hardware between the xbox internal drive (the drive that connects to the top of my xbox) then l was wondering if l could just format a memory stick of reasonable size for specific use on the xbox where things like title updates could go as well as the dash. because l dont think my internal 512mb memory and the 256mb stick would be enough to keep many updates. that would mean l could put a good few more of my backed up games on an external. however that still leaves the question of if l got a usb splitter (should my drive issue not be a drive issue but hardware related) so l could have the wireless adapter on one connection and a usb thumb drive xbox formatted with the dash etc on leaving my front spare usb for use with the external with games on.

I believe that a 2tb HDD is the maximum u can use. Unless it has changed. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Funny you say that i have used 2tb hdd but a friend of mine has 3tb on his and it works fine with no problems but then again another friend tried 3tb on his and it don't work. Hit and miss but 2tb is the safty mark if you get what im saying.

yes you can use a usb memcard for DLC and TU's it just has to be a microsoft formatted storage and not a FAT32 external it must be FATX formatted by the console.

thats what l assumed, but l wanted to check if l had that option. that way should l still have issues with the xbox HD caddy and find its not specifically related to the caddy itself but something else l wanted to know if l had the option of using a USB flash drive as a memory card, that way l could get something like a 32gb one which should allow plenty of space for saves, TUs and anything else that might take up space. tho l might just go ahead and get some sort of cheap usb splitter to test..

as my controller is wired l just need a way to keep a usb thumb drive and the wireless adapter connected that way l could have an external plugged in the front spare still allowing me to download TU updates without having to mess around with changing connectors plus still be able to ftp into the console should l need to edit or upload trainers on games l get stuck with :p

Have you tried changing the SATA cable for your internal HDD? It's not uncommon for them to go bad. Might save you some headache.

Hi, you can just use a usb hub to give you more usb sockets, just be careful not to over load the psu. You can also use the front two memeory card sockets as usb, but there only 3.3volt so some stick drives wont work in them, but externally powered harddrives usually do.

l have 2 spare 20gb xbox drives so l can change them around. that said if its just a drive issue l can still use the 20gb drives just for the dash and still opt for an external drive for games. in any case if worst comes to worst and l need to install the dash to a xbox formatted thumb drive l have a 64gb one already that should work fine since lve already used it for transferring games to my xbox.

tho if l just split the rear usb 2 ways it would save issues in respects to leaving at least one front port for an external. would save allot of aggro when copying games over since l could just copy extracted games directly to the drive with my laptop and just point FSD straight to the storage dir.
