First off sorry because I didn't know where to post this question. Ok, I am thinking about harvesting parts from two motherboards to make one good one. I need to replace the ram from one board to the other. I need to know if it is necessary to install the ram in the same positions. It would be much easier if I could just solder it on one of the open ram spots.

Wow, that is kind of hard to explain. Let me try to rephrase it.

Do you need to replace ram in the exact same spot or can you solder it into one of the open spots.

are you talking about upgrading to 128 ram? you need to put a chip on every open slot to do that. one of my slots is pretty beat up. so, i hope i can just put one chip in a different spot.

unfortunatly i can not get the xbox to work with the ram in the unoriginal positions. There is a 10 - 20 % of this being the result of a bad install. End result you must have 64 mb in thier original spots for the motherboard to work.

Hope this isn't too late but, the RAM upgrade on an xbox is kinda useless. I think it has something to do with the software isn't made to use the extra ram anyway so you won't see any real change in gameplay... I think it only works when running linux...

All in all, it's a waste of time... and a great way to destroy your board.

At least that's what I've been told. :)

Yea as Catalyst said it will only benefit you if you’re going to use Linux, I have heard the new XBMC also benefits from more ram but have not been able to verify that.

If you do the upgrade make sure you use the same manufacture ram as is on the mainboard now, do not mix manufactures as you will have issues and lock ups.

Yes the bad RAM chips will have to be removed or you will have registering issues.

yeah i didn't care about upgrading. I just wanted to fix know if the replacement ram needs to be in the same slots (or positions or what ever you would call them). It turns out that they do
