First post, so I apologize in advance for any faux pas I make. I've worked my way through all the pertinent tutes and searched the forums until I found a post with the same issue (I'm supposing). In the forum " iXtreme Burner Max & Liteon iHas DVD Burners » [GENERAL] How to crossflash ASUS and some other drives as Liteon iHASX24 - " Rooster1973 had trouble flashing a re-branded Asus drw-24b1st drive. I have the same drive; here's it's hardware ID from device manager: IDE\CdRomASUS_DRW-24B1ST_a_1.04
I've tried flashing all the iHASx24-B firmwares to no avail. On some I get 2 bars (incompatible firmware) then failure, on most I get "unexpected error reading file." Any help pointing me in the right direction is appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Yup, used flash utility 6.0.1 from codeguys. I tried changing the flash read size to 4mb as well, since the firmware was 3mb (tried both 2mb and 4mb for all firmwares).

Thanks for the link, but I had already read through that and other forums on MyCe. I hadn't thought of posting a question to c0deKing himself, though. Maybe he'll be able to find out where I'm dropping the ball. I tried all the different firmwares for 324 again to be sure. No joy. Thanks for giving me some more ideas. I just bought a Liteon 324 B from Amazon to cover my bases. Thanks again.

More reading? I already can't wear sunglasses because my reading muscles are too big.:eek2: I've got 6 tabs open in different forums, 3 tutorials open and am learning waaaay more than I wanted to about re-branding and different chipsets. But seriously, I can't fault you for mentioning that as from what I've read everywhere, people don't want to do any work in finding things that already have been answered. That being said, I'm re-looking at the OmniPatcher tute. I didn't think it applied to my situation, but now seems that it does. I'm reading it more in detail right now, and will let you know. Thanks for the help.

Alright, I finally have successfully converted my Asus DRW-24B1ST A 1.04 to a Liteon 524B with firmware AL2A. Hopefully this will help with those getting "unexpected error reading file", error reading eeprom from the drive or other errors using Flash Utility 6.0.1 and EEPROM Utility 6.2.0.
First I changed from AHCI to IDE mode in my BIOS to take away one variable. Next I used the 24x B Series recover flasher (ATAPI.iHAS124_B.AL0L.stock.ppf) from http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares/dvdrw/stock/ATAPI.iHAS124_B.AL0L.stock.ppf.rar to get me to iHAS124 B AL0L firmware. Next I updated to 524B software by clicking on the AL2A .exe file I downloaded here http://www.firmwarehq.com/getdownlo...eb9954e2f1fda2e1cb238f6b63-file_AL2A.EXE.html. I didn't use a flash program for this, I just clicked on the "firmware".exe and it flashed. Then I used EEPROM Utility to "crossflash" and "change" the drive (rebooting after each step). Finally I used the How To Update and Use Liteon iHAS*24-B DVD to iXtreme Burner Max FW *Official Guide* to get the Burner Max firmware on the drive. I cobbled this together from 3 different threads and a lot of reading. Hopefully this will help, since the re-branded drives are way easier to find but take a little more effort for some.
