OK...The X3 may or not be the cats ass of current mod chip technology...but for the casual user I found the BIOS and current dash's to be much more user friendly with my 2.3 Pro....It went something like this;
1) Install mod
2) Flash
3) Check position of single pole double throw switch (choice of M$ or non-conformist-rebel-modcode)
4) Burn copy of LEGALLY purchased xb product
5) Move switch to appropriate position
6) play backup. DUN!
What the everluvin HELL is with all the sh*t involved with trying to make the BIOS and dash's run backup's now!!!!??? The closest I've gotten is to get the backup disc of Bungie's H2 flubber to come up before I get the same M$ bullshit Dirty Disc message.
The latest version of Ava and EvoX don't make it easy to run backups either! (NOT that they aren't great works and very cool!) In ver 3935 (prolly off on this ver # but who cares) I had a nice clean, idiotproof way to launch my backups. sh*t..I can't even get the latest Ava to unlock this POS harddrive on a brandynew 1.6 box. I have to juggle between what the native M$ dash, the X3 1959 BIOS, and the settings in my dash of choice can and will do depending on the settings of all the other aforementioned bullshit.
Pardon the rants but the techogeeks might love this sh*t but at the end of a long assed day the last thing I want to do is go to the net underground to burrow for info on how to make this sh*t work. I realize the legalities of all this but M$ has already said they don't give a sh*t about prosecuting the casual modder so WTF is all the paranoia for!
Everyone has a damn tut for how to do this and how to do that...how bout authoring one that is ALL INCLUSIVE! It ain't like 'puters where the box manufacturer or ver of Winblows or the app or the f**king addon hardware or the ver or date of drivers has sh*t to do with shineola! Show yer stuff people and somebody pull it all together.
The bitchslapping of noobs is NOT cool. Noobs account for a sh*tload more revenue for this hardware development and it's popularity than the hardcorers who never sleep so give it a break.
If you ARE a hardcore xb geek, good for you! Seriously But PLEASE stop the bullshit and get back down to the level of most of us out here. We love the technology for what it is...don't try to make us live your life vicariously. We just wanna be non conformist rebels in a small way and back up our supposedly "indestructable" CD's and play the phuckin things!(CD/DVD technology was sold to us older pharts as indestructible when that technololgy was introduced while you were still your daddy's nocturnal emission sheet stains).
Christ on a bike...I read all the forums and all I see is ALOT of unemployed writers writing sh*t in barely comprehensible English while smacking the rest of us around for not being in the loop. We dont' GIVE a f**k about being in the loop...we just want to enjoy the fruits of somebody else's labors...that's what laying out the cash for sh*t that somebody else made is SUPPOSED to be like in America!
I don't WANT to know how the mutherfucker was made and by how many underpaid Chinese children...I just want the f**ker to work with the least amount of lost sleep and antacids.
I waited 4 f**king months for this goddamn thing...installed it like a pro with nice clean lines and 90 degree bends in my wiring...and for what....just so I could burn a stack of f**kin DVD coasters while I tried to decipher the arrogant postings and tuts of people who were involved in it's development. SURRRRE it's gonna be easy for you for chrissakes. sh*t...for most of the people who bought it just installing it was a massive task...never MIND trying to make the cocksucker work after they conquered the install.
Bottom line...somebody grow a pair and publish a start to finish on this sh*t. I don't care if it's an X3 or one of the other ever increasing line of mods, somebody has got to do it.
I haven't even seen anything in a post or forum that says whether to leave the damn dip switches ON after flashing or if that affects whether backups work or don't if they are on or off...something as small as that is enough to trip up most people...me included... and I was involved in the development of the very first synthesizer back in the early 70's that covered a banquet table and now fits on silicone inside a cell phone.
Point is...if I wanted to put together a puzzle I'd buy one of the f**kers for $2.99...but that ain't gonna happen cause I HATE puzzles.

OK....I want to apologize for my obviously insane rantings in the middle of the night. This new 1.6 box is such a piece of sh*t that I lost it. %$^&#@ cheap assed Phillips drive doesn't even have a shield over the laser module!
I installed a Samsung from another box and all discs now read fine. Sad thing is, I can't even return the frigging thing because I've opened it...which is the ONLY way I would have known the rom wasn't built with all it's parts (I know...I'm short a few parts myself!)
Anyway...my apologies and deepest regards for all who work so hard to make it possible to "get under the hood" of the box and take the time to hold the hands of the rest of us. M$ just pisses me off to no end that a product that I OWN is STILL considered their property to the degree that everyone has to protect themselves. But...Biff (B.G.) has the almanac and he can do whatever the hell he wants I guess.

Re: RROD

there really isn't any reason to do the RROD fix until you have the RROD

just enjoy your good luck!

Yes, get rid of those X-Clamps and that crappy thermal paste on the chips; it WILL make a difference. It will prevent it from overheating and possibly getting the RRoD in the future (X-Clamps won't warp the board or anything). If you do happen to get the RRoD you can always just tighten up the bolts and do a re-flow by over-heating the console. You can find instructions for doing that HERE. You should also modify the wind-shroud of your console for better airflow, you can find instructions on how to do that HERE. I also saw your other post about wanting to do some cosmetic mod on your console - if you're into that you can also add a fan to your console for even more cooling (and if you get a clear fan with LEDs they look pretty cool) - you can find a tutorial on that HERE. And if you're going to be adding a fan, you should also switch out the stock fan at the back for a Talismoon Whisperfan - they look better and provide better cooling. You can also check out Talismoon's other products, they are pretty nice too.

I've had an Xbox 360, made in 2006 which got the RRoD, I replaced the motherboard with one my friend gave me that he recently did the penny trick or something on it to get it out of RRoD. That console was constantly overheating but modifying the windshroud fixed it. Also, I bought a console manufactured in 2008 which also got the RRoD - the X-Clamp fix did the trick and it's still going strong.
