Howto: Recover key from fried slim LiteOn

Had a fellow modder contact me a couple of days ago, asking for help. he had fried a slim liteon, most likely plugged the powerconnector up-side-down:eek:
So i decided too help him and had him send it over and incase of success i took some photos, and guess what! It was a success! so now i decided do give ya'll a litle howto

First of all, when i hooked it up to my ck3 Pro (Rev-D) it would not turn on, probably a neat protect mode or something.
So i cracked the DVD case open and found "c6" fried, witch is a 6volts 100uFarad capacitor. I've heard the most normal component to fail is "R1" a 0ohm ressistor.
Despite the rumour the ressistor on this board did not fail!

Now it was time to start the search, after 30minutes of unscrewing old PC parts i ended up with a 6.3volt 100uF from a insanely old Floppy drive! Somehow i just knew i would get good use for it someday. :rolleyes2:

Went on to desoldering the components. The cap on the floppy was no biggie, just soldered the to points on the backside of the pcb where the cap was located together, and gently pulled it out using a tweezer while i held the iron on the backside.

Now the cap in the LiteOn drive was harder, as it was'nt soldered trough the pcb.
The way i did it may not be correct, but i added a little solder to both points, grabbed it with a tweezer and heated the right side wile pulling, this way i managed to move it 0.2mm.
Did the same on the left side and it let loose from the left point.
did the right side again and it came completly loose.
removed solder with 2mm desolder braid.

Fyi: mage is taken before i cleaned it, forgot to take a picture after i cleaned it.

Apply some flux and solder to the two points and the cap leggs, now solder it on the right way around!
Note the little plus sign on the PCB right next to the cap's location, this marks the plus side on the pcb.
in case you don't know + and - on the cap, it has a white stripe on one side with some + or - symbol's on it.
if your 0ohm ressistor burned out simply remove it and relplace it with a little solder or solder a new 0ohm ressistor on it.

now hook it up to your x360usb and hit slimkey in JF, click no and you should now have your drive key!!

Note the cap i choose to use is only to get the key as it is way too tall to fit in the drive casings..

Good luck! Hope i helped someone!

And don't forget to note my signature!

I was thinking about something on the lines of this aswell. Thanks for sharing that it will work. I guess its time to start looking for a 6v 100uFarad capacitor. I wonder if I could pick one up at radio shack.
