Red/Green frag software related?

I have an xecuter 2.6 w/ a Xapt3r solderless adapter. I'm running bios 4983.67.

Been using the mod for over a year with no problems. Anyway, used a backup disc a few weeks ago and it hung on me. Happens sometimes so I just shut the unit off.

When I re-started, I got the dreaded red/green frag light. Nothing had changed with the hardware - never moved the box. Try other backups, same problem. One particular backup actually worked, so I thought it was temporary. But no, on the next boot it was back to the red/green problem.

Is there any chance there the software caused some problem? The bios is fine, I would think, because one backup did boot one time (although one time only). The unit works fine, of course, when the chip is "off".

I can't see it being a connection issue - a no solder chip that worked fine for ages, and the unit was never moved. It definitely occured right after the backup disc crashed.

Maybe a hardware malfunction is what caused the crash, but out of the blue?

Any thoughts?

The bios is not the problem here. You said it was solderless, what version is the xbox? As said before you should open the Xbox up and check the install.

I'm going to do that in a few minutes and make sure everything is fine. I'm not exactly sure which version - 1.6 I think, but I need to check.

When I installed the solderless adapted originally, it didn't fit cleanly (overlapped a chip) but it still worked. It wasn't my install, either. My board actually looked a bit different than the one in the tutorials.

Still, as I said, it's been fine for over a year. I'll check the connection in a few minutes and see if it's a simple problem.

Problem solved...oddly enough.

I took the cover off, removed the drives, etc. Re-checked the d0 wire, re-checked the chip. Unscrewed the adapter, re-attached the chip, made sure it was straight and level. Re-inserted both drives.

Power on. Working. Great! Loose chip.

But...put the cover back on, screw closed. Not working.

Take the cover off. Working.

Something is putting pressure on the chip. Can't tell what, don't know why it would be all of a sudden when I never touched the box at all.

Anyway, the cover is on loosely (no screws) and it works. Any hazard to leaving the cover on this way?

Did you run the switch wires under the controller port? If so you may have pinched one.

I ran them through an opening under the controller port. You're right - that may have been the problem. If not there, then closer to the connection.

I'm wondering if I'm not "tilting" the chip from the DVD drive somehow.

Well, small resurfacing going on.

I had a backup in the drive. Red the disc, played it, no problem. After playing, got to another loading screen. Hang. Re-start - red/green frag. Take a few seconds to re-start - fine again. But this happened over and over, always at the same place (re-loading a section within the game).

It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Loading a cutscene or something like that would cause the DVD drive to spin faster. Maybe you have a loose connection somewhere or the added vibration of the drive spinning is causing a short to happen or your solderless adaptor isn't tight enough. This is probably not the case, but it is something to look into.
