Reliable way of checking versions?

Or maybe the title should be, "Checking the XBox version without opening".

I'm looking to modding an xbox with the X3 chip and xapter solderless solution. As you all know, the 1.6, cannot support the solderless solution. So, I'm basically looking to buy a older xbox. I found this:

On the dashboard menu, scroll down until you see Settings. Next, scroll down until you see System Info. Wait for a few seconds, and the text in the window on the right will begin scrolling. At the end of the text will be two numbers, a K and a D number. Write them down. They will look something like this:

K: 1.00.4034.01
D: 1.00.5659.03

The one you are interested in is the K number. Note, if you get no K number, it is a 3944.

If K = 3944, 4036, or 4627 then you have a v1.0 XBOX.

If K = 4034 then you have either a 1.0 or 1.1 XBOX. You will find out for sure if there are two fans inside after you open it up. A case fan and a GPU fan = v1.0 XBOX. Most 4034 XBOXes are v1.0.

If K = 4817, or 4972 then you have a v1.1 XBOX.

If K = 5101, 5530 or 5713 then you have a v1.2-1.5 XBOX. You can find out specifically which version you have after you open up the case. Most v1.5s are 5530. Most v1.4s are 5101 or 5713. The Halo LE 1.4 is 5713. Also, all v1.5 XBOXes have mfg dates in August 2003.

If K = 5838 or higher then you have a v1.6 XBOX. The Halo LE 1.6 is 5838.

My question is, is this a reliable way to check the xbox version? I'm planning on buying a "[font=verdana, arial, helvetica]K:1.00.5101.01" xbox, which from this guide says to be a 1.5. If I end up with a 1.6 I might be a little frusterated.

There isnt really a sure fire way to get an exact version number without opening the xbox and checking to see what chipsets are in it.

There is a program out there where you can enter your serial number into and it checks a database or whatever to help you determine your xbox version. There are a few websites that also tell you how to read the date/serial number etc to figure out the version number. Like I said, this isnt always accuate.
