Removal of QSB

Hi guys,

I have been given a Falcon by a friend of mine who obviously thought too highly of himself when it comes to soldering. While he has made the contacts to the QSB ok, I am pretty sure he has destroyed a few of the traces on the JTAG board as the probe gives no charge on the DB1F1 and reads are coming off terribly.

I was wondering if anyone knows any good ways to take off the QSB and I will just do the JTAG manually? Any hints would be great.

Update: I was writing this last night, got a little distracted and went a head and took off the JTAG QSB and have done the wires manually. He originally soldered DB1F1 himself and now there is no solder left on the point, anyone know any great tips to solder that when there is no solder on the point? Crap loads of flux?
I still do need to remove another QSB so any hints for doing it cleanly would be great.

you can leave the qsb on,,, and if there's no solder just loads of flux thats a good thing as you only need to solder it yourself ,prep work done,

Unfortunately I'm not at the box at the moment, but when I get a chance I will make sure to put up some pics. Nice new macro lens will do nicely :)

From what I saw it was one of the J2D1 traces, but thats all I saw in the hour or so I had with it.

Thanks for all the help so far guys.

I think I'll pay for some soldering lessons for my buddy. Urgh.

Edit: I did get the NAND reading last night. Bad blocks were rampant. He said he got a perfect read, but I would be inclined to think he was drunk while doing this lol.

here are some alt pics mate. these are xmods pics so all thanks and credit to him. hop they help.

j2d1 isnt used mate. you use j2d2 for the jtag qsb and j1d2 and j2b1 for the nand qsb.

Sorry, meant J2B1, my bad.
Thanks for the info tho.
I had another look at it and there was just crap/residue from something everywhere, but none of the traces were gone, just looked burnt. Cleaned it up with some Iso Alcohol, soldered again and it is reading/writing nicely.

I am left now with a weird situation. Did the alternate points for DB1F1 (OPEN_TRAY) and front panel (AUD_CLAMP). Now whenever I try to boot (SMC Patched NAND) I get E79 (I am checking the solders again now) I also get an ejecting dvd drive. Stock NAND boots fine.

Only caused by crappy soldering? Or something more menacing?

Edit: DVD eject is normal using alt points. Totally forgot about that.

Do you have a multimeter? If not, get one! And if you do; test all traces and joints. When you are done, and hopefully found and fixed bad traces/joints, write freeboot to the nand.

There is a thrread for testing with a multimeter. I think it is stickied.

Hope it helped, and good luck!

With alternative points and using the DVD OPEN_TRAY signal the tray will eject randomly every now and then when you power the console. This normal and is much easier to live with than the random E79 errors. Just press the tray eject button again to close the tray.
