Hey all,

I've been running into a real problem as of recently.

I just got my new laptop for a graduation gift (Dell Inspiron 9300, 1.93 gHz, 1 gig of RAM, AMD x300 128 bit GC, BURN! :)) from my folks. However, it came preinstalled with Windows XP Pro. I fully intend to keep Windows (as my college required it... lame). However, I want to put on a 15 gig Red Hat Linux partition (as my desktop is entirely Red Hat).

I'm pretty sure there is a way to steal 15 free gigs from the primary partition, leaving my current file system intact, and use that as a logical drive for Linux. However, how do I do that? I've tried going through the command console, as well as using the gooey software, but to no avail. Can anybody assist me here?

I've also tried to simply use the Red Hat install disks to do it, but it claims it cannot because or that there is not enough free space (I know there is plenty: 45 gigs worth). Sigh... it's very sad... I'm done. :)

Windows doesn't give you any tools to resize partitions. What you're looking for is Partition Magic by PowerQuest. It really is the best partitioning tool available. It will do what you're asking and a bunch more.

Check it out here: http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/

It's really expensive though... I think I have a copy at home I can let you "borrow"

When I get home I'll check.

Yea I agree with Martin C as PartitionMagic is on of the Best partitioning software out there. But it's now under the Symantec label as they where aquired by Norton Family:D.

I've been using PartitionMagic for quite a while now, began using it for Dual OS purposes like what you want to do with your DELL. Note be careful with the DC jack on that model as there prone for failure when not handled properly and are not replacable at the moment. Also you can up the GC on this model:cool:

There is another prog out there called Acronis Disk Director Suite, I have used it and seems to all what PM does for half the price.

Thanks Martin! I knew there was some way to do so. That's very helpful.

Hmmm, I just may think about that! If I can manage to quelsh my conscience, then I'll look into it. Or, since I just got money for participation in a medical study (I love being a test subject... such easy money! :)), I think I just may buy that software. It looks very useful. Another possibility could potentially be looking for a boot live version of Linux (Knoppix, perhaps?) that has the same capabilities, although I suspect that is does not. That could potentially be dangerous, may not be included. I would prefer to do it for free, but I don't want to steal either. My record is pretty good so far, and I think I want to keep it that way. Yeah, I'm a goodie goodie. :)

Thanks for the warning. It's my baby, so I'm pretty protective...

Yeah, I could upgrade the graphics card, but it's still capable of running Doom 3 and Halflife 2 at almost full settings, so it's good enough for right now. I'll look into it later, perhaps when prices come down. Besides, it's still very high end... ;)

I will also look up reviews for both products. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks y'all: all of you all have been very helpful!
