this is interesting, my drive takes a long time to go to open tray also. i will try teh ripping drive test.I've had similar issues with two drives(both Benq) recently both displaying open tray errors. I bought two new replacement lasers off of ebay from a previous seller i used before in which i had success from.I tried both lasers out in the drives and could not get either of them to work properly.I even took the known working laser from my 0800 ripping drive and i tried it in the drives that were giving me the open tray issues and it still showed open tray error even with the working laser in it.Once i put the working laser back in the 0800 drive it worked just fine again.
I gave up on them and figure that there must be some other issues with the drives themselves that i do not know about. Both drives open and close fine and the lasers move up and down the track just fine when trying to read discs but they seem to hang on "reading" for a good 1-2 minutes before finally saying open tray. All other open tray errors I've encountered has also went straight the open tray message with 10 seconds of trying to read the disc.
Have you replaced the worm motor?
if you were asking me, yes i tried one out of a working lite-on drive. there was no change.Have you replaced the worm motor?

unfortunately, before i knew what the hell i was doing, i updated the dash to 14719. so i am stuck waiting for 2.0.Yes you can do this with RGH1 also if you have the right dash that is it will be in the KV info
Blew up my last PCB the same way and replaced it. My laser isn't moving on the rails... Interesting. Maybe you can bump that up to two Teajunkie.Do you know how many worm motors i have replaced in the last 5-6 years in 360's??
ONE yep just one and that was because the drive was reversed powered and damaged it.
Chances of the worm motor going are slim to none.
Laser is 99.9% the issue.

Could be the ribbon but that wouldnt read at all if there is a broken connection.
You can use a liteon ribbon cable if you have one laying about.
Try this replace the laser guide. I have had several dvd drives where i still get open tray when replacing the laser. I get mixed media disc and also unrecognized disc errors. To fix this replace the laser guide!!!! Sometimes it can be the laser cable but if you removed the antistatic ball, made sure the pot tweak was set to the standard 3.20-3.35 for Phats. Then check that the laser cable is not damaged, after that replace the laser guide. It may not seem logical that it will not be the laser guide but i've fixed several dvd drives where the laser guide was the problem. Its very very unlikely it's anything else i'd say its a less than 5% chance the problem is something other than the antistatic solderball, laser, pot tweak, laser guide, laser cable. Let me rephrase i'd say its a 95% chance it's the laser, laser cable, antistatic solderball, pot tweak, or laser guide. In your case try replacing the laser guide.
I have the same problem with my elite, i had it off my brother coz he couldn't be bothered to wait to play a game, i got a "NEW" laser from ebay and it worked fine for a few days, then open tray error kept showing when i turned it on, after 10-20 minutes of open/close tray i got play game so i did this while i waited for another laser came. The same problem occured with the newer laser, so i swapped out the small band as i was instructed this would help, nope same problem, i got another drive (not new) and swapped the logic boards over and this helped for a few months then that laser gave me the same problem and is still playing up to this day. Now tell me it's the motor again because obviously this had nothing to do with the reading ability, so how is it fixed?i have been working on this for days. tried many search querries but no luck. first i tried tweaking the pots on the original laser as per the instructions found here and elswhere, to no avail. then i replaced the laser with a new unit but it still acts the same.
in some of the videos i have seen of a working drive, the laser is parked somewhere in the mid section of the disk. mine is parked all the way in near the center of the disk. it does move back and forth a bit but not much. if i turn the machine off and manually park the laser near the middle, it just goes back to the center when i turn it back on. might this indicate a problem with the drive mainboard?
i don't think this is a power brick problem (like i have read in another thread here), as i have one power brick and multiple functioning consoles that all work fine.
is it possible there might be a sata connection issue? and how might i test for that. short of swapping cables?
any and all help is greatly appretiated.
