Replacement PCB vs New Drive

So unfortunately i have a liteon 0401. I was planning on following the unlocked replacement PCB route which costs 60-80. I was wondering however if maybe replacing the DVD drive entirely would work since it seems to be more cost efficient - a benq VAD6038 goes for around 30. If this does work, what drives would you recommend i swap it out with/which are the easiest to flash? And is there anything i should watch out for (specific FW vers.) when buying a new DVD?

If you are going to buy a replacement drive you need to get the exact same model as was originally in the console, spoofing is not supported with LT+ 3.0 plus that wouldn't help your situation anyway. Since I'm assuming you have 13599 dash or newer, otherwise you wouldn't be in this predicament, you have no other choice than to buy an unlocked PCB or hack the PCB yourself.

actually im not sure if i have the 13599 dash. I got it today as a refurb and opening it up right away to see what drive/fw it had. It says DG-16D4S 0401 on the drive, and i was under the impression that those are locked no matter what. If i have a Dash before 13599 is it not write-protected?

You can flash a 0401 with LT+ 3.0 with either a Kamakazi hack (Winbond) or Sputnik Hack (MXIC), the Sputnik being easier and superior of the two. However, I am not sure if there are any MXIC in 0401.

On the DVD Drive PCB, on the chip itself it will say 03 or 05, this will tell you if you have MXIC or Winbond.

You're going to want to update your dash at some stage so it will lock the drive anyway. Take the best route and buy a TX pcb, or hack the pcb you have that way any future updates wont bother you. Sems a bit of a cost for now but once it's in place you wont have to mess about again.

Dude All slims are locked after on 13599 dash,so now you need to buy a replacement pcb or RGH it and play games from hdd or you can play games from your original dvd drive or as your 1st choice ypu can buy any xbox dvd drive to play backup or original(but remember ,your key needed to be same as your stock drive) !

haha i wish i was capable of RGHing it, but i have yet to solder anything in my life and don't want to risk my 360s life. thanks for the suggestions and information everyone, but I will most likely go the PCB replacement route since i am uncomfortable with soldering.

He can still unlock it with Kamakazi or Sputnik.

OP, please check which chip (MXIC/Winbond) before buying anything!
whether its an mxic or winbond doesnt matter which PCB replacement i get does it?

If it's an mxic chip you shouldn't have any problems hacking that so it will be cheaper to buy the probe and flash her that way (that's what sexdrugsoverclocking is quite correctly pointing towards) . If you're inexperienced and its a winbond then you should probably buy the replacement pcb as the kamikaze hack is not for the faint hearted.

Sputnik Switch works great and its cheap if you got 03(Mxic) chip.

Drilling the winbond with Kamikaze might get you unlock but if you drill deep might cause error on flash or drive open problems.
