Replacing desoldered DVDdrive

Ok some background:

My little bro asked me to mod his xbox(samsung M28) by using the desolder method. Suffice it to say I was careless and ripped out the metal leads when I desoldered the resistor. Now I have nothing to solder the wires to and the drive is shot (still taking suggestions if it is salvagable!!!).

We went ahead and ordered another drive(M25) and from what I read what I need to do is extract the key from the original M28. I would then need to flash the new drive (M25) with the key and a hacked firmware?

If someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction or even a tutorial that would be awesome and much appreciated.

if you can somehow read the original firmware you can replace the drive, But if no firmware can be read and you dont already have the key then you are SOL im pretty sure. But i am not a samsung genius.

Should have bought the $10 via SATA card from ebay, then you wouldnt have had to desolder the resistor im pretty sure.

Ya i dont have a VIA chipset mobo so that wasnt an option. Do you have any idea what program I would use to read my firmware?

to have any chance of reading your firmware you will need a VIA SATA pci card or a motherboard with a compatable VIA chipset.

Depends how bad the soldering mess is if the drive will read at all or if you can correct your errors but imo it's doubtful

No disrespect to you but this is a prime example of not being confident with the VCC method so I always try and get people to invest in a VIA SATA chipset to avoid this.

So if I am understanding correctly

1. I am going to have to get a Via Pci sata card for me to fix this error?

2. What proggy do I use to read the firmeware?? A link would be nice.

You should be able to repair it by following the traces and soldering a wire from the next closest via's to each pad, or install two wires to a switch and use the vcc method. If you buy a VIA chipset, you can just solder a single wire and flash the drive.

I'll see if i can find a pic of the pcb and show you which via's to join.

Read textbooks tutorial found here.

Well after a few hours of tinkering I have made some progress. I was studying the PCB and noticed that the right pad of resistor 408 had a tiny metal lead going into down into the resistor below (you can even see it on the picture in Textbook's tutorial). So I decided to solder it directly into that resistor and amazingly it worked.

I was able to read my drives firmware (THANK GOD!!! Now I have the key)but for some strange reason when I went to flash, it said no drive detected???

Some insight from the guru's as to why im getting this and how to fix it would be appreciated.
