botched a 1.0 install so got a 1.6a mobo. stock hdd was locked to old mobo so couldnt access it to get the game saves to put on upgraded hdd. is there anyway to get those gamesaves??

Only way is to get the old motherboard working at least so FlashBIOS will load (you can then unlock the HDD from there), or contacting someone who can remove and read the EEPROM data from the chip - this can be used to unlock the drive also.

Another option is to read the tutorials on xbox-scene.com to find out how to recover or unlock a xbox hd with a dead motherboard. This is not an easy process, but very possible. Good luck
thanks for your help. seems like a very long process so i'll probably give it a miss and just try n complete them again lol
