FIXED: Falcon won't boot with a drive connected

Hello Everyone.

I've seen several threads with similar problems but I've yet to come across a solution or even any advice.

I just did my first CoolRunner installation and everything has worked ok up to the last step. (I did however accidently attach the STBY_CLK to the wrong point at first.)(Maybe this is the problem?)

It will boot to Xell or the Dash if neither the DVD or the Hard Drive are connected. And I am able to run XEX Menu from a USB drive.

It will boot to Xell (using the eject button) regardless of the drives connections.

It will not boot to the Dash with either the DVD or Sata HDD plugged in. The CR just keeps flashing green.

If I plug the Sata HDD in while it is booted to the Dash, the screen will go blank and the 360 will reboot immediately and not boot up. (CR keeps flashing)

Any suggestions? I'm thinking I may have to just use a USB drive instead as another user here was suggesting.

Thanks for the support.

EDIT: I have fixed my Xbox. See Post #21

ok did you have the dvd and HDD connected when u pulled the nand from it

also did you have the coolrunner installed before u pulled the nand aswell

i always have the dvd and HDD connected when i pull the nand i dont know why lol
also i dont install the coolrunner until after the nand has been good etc no issues so far

how long have you waited for the xbox to boot everytime you turn it on?
When the drives aren't connected it will boot within 5 seconds. I've waited several minutes while they're connected and no boot.

I did not have the drives connected when I read my NAND. Is that bad? Is there a way to go back and redo it? The tutorials I had read did not mention leaving them connected.

The CoolRunner was not connected while I read the NAND.

Thanks for the replies guys.

does it boot with the hdd and dvd plugged out mate
Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. While the DVD and HDD are connected, it will boot to Xell with the eject button but not to the dash with the power button.

What would be the procedure at this point to read my NAND again, but with the drives connected? Would I have to flash the NAND that I read the first time back to the 360 first?

A picture of how your blue and green wires are running across the board would be ideal. You however should try moving them around and see it will boot or not.

Sorry my camera sucks. I can try to get a better one if necessary.

Also, I tried repositioning them somewhat, but still not booting while drives are connected.

Thanks again for the replies. :D

Ok. I flashed my NAND back to stock and disconnected the 3.3v to the CoolRunner.

The behavior is the same. The 360 will not boot with the DVD or HDD connected (the center light blinks green repeatedly).

If I try booting it without the DVD I get an error. (E74 I think).

Does this mean I've destroyed the SATA controller somehow?

Any suggestions?

E74 dictates, scaler HANA/ANA chip.
I don't know why you're blaming the sata port?
I would try disconnecting all the CoolRunner cables form the motherboard and just write the original NAND gain.

I appoligize. The error was actually E79.

I've now disconnected all of my wiring and QSB's. I've checked all the connections for bridges and looked over the motherboard for solder splashes. I also flashed my original NAND back to the 360.

The Xbox will not boot with the DVD drive plugged in. It just gives a flashing green center light. If I boot it without the drive it will boot to 1 flashing red light and the E79 error.

I fear I've permanently damaged it. I did have the STBY_CLK connected to the wrong point at first so maybe that did it.

I'm willing to try any other suggestions you all may have but otherwise I'll start looking for another 360.

Thanks for all the replies. :D

I believe E79 is something to do with HDD. But it is not the case in your situation.
As you said you flashed the original nand back, try reading the nand again this time but, give it a different name and compare with the VERY FIRST NAND.

post your result

Did you use the -w parameter rather than +w with nandpro to write the original NAND?
I had used +w to flash my orignal NAND back to the console.

I redid it twice (picking 2 random bins) for good measure using these commands:

nandpro usb: -w16 nand1.bin
nandpro usb: -w16 nand4.bin

I believe E79 is something to do with HDD. But it is not the case in your situation.

After reflashing my original NAND back to the console I reread it using this command:

nandpro usb: -r16 nand5.bin

And compared them all using variations of this command:

fc /b nand1.bin nand2.bin

Each matched one another.

Now the console no longer shows the E79 error, but it is still not booting with the DVD drive attached. It will however boot to the stock dash without the DVD drive.

Thanks again guys for your help. Do we think its beyond repair yet?

you still using the QSB for the nand-x ? if so did you make sure the stby_clk the one near the hana chip is clean on the bottom not touching the board in any way ?
that could mess some things up.

The QSB I'm using is the smaller one that doesn't connect to the hana chip.

same situation here (got a friend's box with broken pad on stby_clk):
i think there is something f'ed up with the stby_clk point, since with my box the pad was broken, and you wired it to the wrong point.

I fixed the pad, and now got the exact same results as you do: Dvd/Hdd plugged in = box won't boot, center green light starts flashing.

However, i played around with replacing the R4B24, and using 23Ohm leads to the green light not flashing anymore when the dvd is plugged in, yet the box is not booting with it connected. Without Dvd/hdd box boots up fine (instant). Im out of any other resistors, but ill try playing around with a few tomorrow, maybe there is just something f'ed up there (ye i know original R4B24 is ~33-36ohm)

I went and bought a magnifying visor (a great $10 investment for this type of work) and after closely looking over the whole board I found that I had lifted 2 pads at and next to the STBY_CLK point. Also one of the resistors was damaged so I pulled it off of another trashed board that I have. I feel like I did a real clean job on repairing both pads and the damaged resistor but it is still doing the same thing.

Same thing over here. I rgh'ed my slim trinity and i can
boot fine to freestyle dashboard, but when I connect the hard drive & dvd it does nothing.
It would't be a problem if I never got the hard drive & dvd rom to work again bacause I stil can play all my games from the freestyle dash, but the problem arises when I want to play original xbox games like (Killer Instinct), when i start the emulator it complains that a I dont have a xbox hard drive in.
I read somewhere that (fcrt.bin or SMC.bin) control the sata devices. I'm wondering if these two had to be backed up when I read my first original nand. I tried some tools to recreate my stock nand, but they complained that I did not have a clean SMC.bin, would I be able to get it out from my original nand?
