I am really confused as to if I need coolrunner qsbs or not. Every thread I have read does not answer this qustion. I have a phat jasper and I already ordered these items

Nand-x

Nand-x to coolrunner cable
http://www.xconsoles.com/products/Xecuter-NAND%2dX-To-CoolRunner-JTAG-Cable.html

coolrunner
http://www.xconsoles.com/products/Xecuter-CoolRunner-RevB.html

I was wondering if I needed this
qsb
http://www.xconsoles.com/products/Xecuter-NAND%2dX-&-CoolRunner-Phat-QSB-Install-Kit.html

I looked everywhere for this answer. I saw a tutorial here that does not mention this item, but used it in the tutorial, but I didn't notice him using it until after I already placed the order. He didn't mention anything about needing it.

Its base on preference. If you feel comfortable soldering then you can solder the cables directly to the points. People also use pin headers. I highly recommend buying the QSBs since they are already cheap.

Thank you for the responses. So i cannot use the qsbs that come with the nandx? In the description, it says it comes with a j1d2 and a j2b1. The qsbs i posted in the last link in my post also come with that, well in the description it says so. But the pictures look different. Can someone please explain? Thanks.

With reference to this post, I would suggest using the alternative to the top-side STBY_CLK point :).
This! Across my first two rgh I spent about 90minutes trying to get this point correct with the QSBs, using the alternative point I've done it twice in 90seconds. With the cool runner you don't even need to get wire as you can use the spare long wire from the slim wires.

As regard QSBs or not, I've done 2 QSB, 1 with wires. QSBs were probably better for first efforts as they made it harder to kill stuff, also they ensure you do the right joints.

But with wires, if the wire sticks, it's good. With QSBs I was never really sure the solder had made good contact, and so found myself reheating every joint trying to work out which didn't settle right.

Using a multi meter removes any doubt and saves having to reheat every joint.
