Hey guys, just got ahold of a 1st gen (xenon?) with RROD. I'm hoping to JTAG it, as it's sat in a closet for a long time apparently, but first I need to get the RROD sorted.

What has been the success rate on the TX RROD II kit? Should I just do it, or bite the bullet and go for a reflow/reball?

I'm sure this has been asked/answered already at some point but I didn't get specific enough info from my searches.

On a side note - I'm really thrilled about the fact that I already have most of what I need to JTAG since it came with the nand-x! Thanks again TX!

if it hasn't been opened before you can prob just reflow it and use the TX kit

if it has already been reflowed then you prob need to reball

what ever happens you will need to do the RROD repair to find out if it has a exploitable dashboard or not to jtag it. so just go for it, i have used the TX rrod kits before and it does the job but just dont expect it to last forever

It's a virgin, still had the sticker when I opened it. How do you reflow with the kit? I thought you needed a pricey machine for that, and I have heard the towel/penny trick is not recommended either...

It probably seems a little funny to some of you pros out there but I've never had an RROD before so thanks for understanding!

Edit: One more, if I go for reball, what's a reasonable price? $40?

A galaxy far far away....
buy the tx rrod kit, after install, overheat the console and see what ya get

it may work for days, months, years. give it the 48 hour test (leaving the console on with a game running)

if it works, great..if it doesn't work, then go for the reflow

What's the secondary error code? It may not even need a reflow or a reball.
if you don't know how to find the secondary error code, use the search button or Google.
Then when you know the code we can pinpoint the issue.

Update: Okay, I took it to a guy who reballed the GPU and he said the MOBO is screwed because it didn't work. Nothing has been done to this MOBO before him. He didn't charge me, but he says it's unfixable. He just can't tell me exactly why. Is there such a thing as an UNFIXABLE RROD code 0102?

I don't think he reballed it. Hell. I can overheat my 0102 and it works. I just choose not to. Want to get it reballed one day.

That could be but why would someone offer to perform a service, agree on fee, then just not do it and BS the customer? I guess there's no shortage of d**kweeds out there but that doesn't make any sense to me... Now I wonder if I should just try the x-clamp fix or send it off to someone like Martin C for a second opinion... but shipping from MO, USA to wherever he's at overseas is prolly :eek2:

Update: It doesn't look like he even touched it! I removed the x-clamps and the resin around the GPU is still present. WTF would someone do that? I'm going to post photos as soon as my battery charges so you guys can have a look for yourselves.

Figured as much. Doesn't look touched. Hit up xmods or little. They both do reflows/reballs in the us.

I'm sorry but an xbox with 0102 is never unfixable(unless damaged by poor repair) especially if it's a virgin. There's a few things that could be causing the issue but most likely a reflow would sort it reball for long term. You can dump the NAND to determine if it's even exploitable to save the trouble and cost.

That [email protected]#$er! :mad2: Why would someone waste your time like that? He told me he did a complete reball of the GPU and it still wouldn't work, then he mentioned how he saves bad mobos for parts. Bet maybe he was hoping I'd say, "Well if it's no good, then you can have the parts", thereby hosing me out of a perfectly good reparable system. Some people these days! Oh well, in a way it's good news as it didn't cost me anything (aside from gas) and there's hope for this mobo yet.

Can you say for 100% certain it hasn't been touched? AFAIK all the old paste and resin comes off before a reflow/reball, yes?

I would love to warn people about this d**kweed, he's got youtube vids up downing the only other repair shop in the Springfield area, guess I'll start there.

Pm me a link to his vids and I'll let you know if he's bullshitting I charge 40 for a reflow and 60 for a reball the extra 20 is for the new gpu. My guess is he tried new paste and the baking trick if he couldn't tell you why it wouldn't work he doesn't know his stuff. The only time I have had a reball fail was operator error back when I started. It would be nice to know if he really did and what type of solder balls or paste he used cause it makes a hell of a temp difference when reflowing I'm guessing he didn't because a reflow with a nice presoak would have sorted it why jump straight to reball my rule of thumb is 3 flows then Ball.

If you have a really good camera take a pic of the bga underneath the chip and I'll tell you if it has been reballed. I'll post a pic here in a sec of a freshly reballed bga

if it has been reballed it should be shiny

My camera's not good enough to get a pic but I can say they don't seem any shinier than the ones under the CPU. I'll PM you those links here in just a sec.

Edit: PM Sent.
