Safe to update?

I'm a complete noob to this stuff, so can anyone can help me out on if it is safe to update my 360 dashboard?

I haven't update my dashboard since Dec 2013. The current version of my dashboard is: 2.0.16537.0

Do I need to update my dashboard firmware before I update the mandatory XBL dashboard update? (So, I don't get banned from MS)

How can yo say that without knowing what mod he has got, if he has rgh and uses an official update this will cause him a problem.

Yes, I do connect to Xbox Live.

When I attempt to sign in for Xbox Live, I am prompted to do a mandatory dashboard update. Just wondering if it is safe to update my dashboard, or if I need to update the firmware on my 360.

It is recommended that you flash the drive back to stock before updating. once the update is done, then you can just flash back the lt+3.0 firmware.
