SAMHACK error with MS28

I have a MS28 and purchased a SATA card with VIA6421 chipset. I'm using Textbook's tuturial and used a floppy in Bootmaker. Here is what I've done so for:

1) Booted the computer with the floppy and turned the 360 on at the same time.

2) Typed SAMREAD 1234567 12345 (my serial) and hit enter, I first thought that my chipset hadn't been detected but did some searching and discovered that Bootmaker names it "Xtreme Pri Master" when it hexedits so chose that. Before I chose it I had turned of the 360 so now I turn it back on it starts to read. Goes from 0-100% a few times. Success? No!

The problem is that I was expecting to get the message "Now unplug the SATA cable and power-cycle the PC and DVD drive before running SAMHACK 1234567 12345” but what I got was "Please restart your PC". I have no idea why it isn't giving me the correct message.

Then I went ahead anyway and tried the SAMHACK command by booting with the floppy and turning the 360 back on without the SATA plugged in, plugged in the SATA cable and entered "SAMHACK 1234567 12345" and got this error: "HACKED.BIN for XBOX 360 S/N 1234567 12345 doesn't exist - aborting!"

I noticed the part about booting into DOS and using the command prompt and the noob question here is, is that different from booting with the floppy? Do I need to change something in the BIOS? If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

On your floppy, in the directory where samhack is, there should be a backup/1234567/12345 directory. That directory should contain your orig.bin and hacked.bin. Does the hacked.bin exist?

hey caster, I was looking through the forums and came across this topic http://www.360mods.net/Forums/viewtopic/t=1360/highlight=samhack+error.html and notice that the person you helped there had the same problem or a similar one at some point. Do you think my problem could be something like that? I reassembled the 360 and tried out my original game and it works so I'm glad I didn't end up bricking it. Just want to get everything sorted out before I give it another try, I'm sure theres a simple fix to the problem.

Yes, that sort of explains it.

Download samtool (found in the downloads section) and extract it to the directory containing orig.bin on your floppy. Pick whatever Xtreme firmware you want to use (xtrem52a-d.bin), rename it to hacked.bin and put it in the same directory as orig.bin. Open a command window (or boot to dos and run before flashing), goto your floppy and to the directory containing samtool.exe, orig.bin, and hacked.bin and type:

samtool orig.bin hacked.bin

Then you should be good to go. If it prompts you to copy your version from your original to your hacked, select Y. Run samhack 1234567 12345 and it will flash the hacked.bin you just patched with your key/version

I went into the command prompt and typed "A:" and got into the floppy. Typed dir and see all the files listed. I don't have much experience in this and see that the person you helped with this same problem also had the same issue in Samtool, after I'm in the floppy I type:

backups\1234567\12345\samtool.exe

and get the message "Error: You did not satisfy the required parameters. Proper usage: samtool originalfirmware samsunghackedfirmware

So my problem I think is I'm an idiot and don't know how to properly access subfoldes within the floppy, if you could please let me know what I should be typing in there that would help. The thing with the last person you helped is there was never any resolution with that issue on the thread so I have no idea how they fixed it.

RSB101, you are nearly there but not quite.

A:\> cd backups\1234567\12345\

A:\backups\1234567\12345> samtool orig.bin hacked.bin

the orig.bin and the hacked.bin are the parameters for the samtool command.

That should sort you out. Good luck

Thanks englishbryan thats exactly what I needed to know. What I did earlier though was move the files from the directory into the root floppy folder and just ran samtool from there. Samtool said everything was successful after it copied the key and created the text file. Then I moved the files back into the directory and tried to flash again. This time the "SAMHACK 1234567 12345" went through with the chipset being detected and everything and I ended up with this:

Flash Type: "SST(SST39SF020)"
Updating...Bank0 Ok!
Updating...Bank1 Ok!
Updating...Bank2 Ok!
Updating...Finished! Datasum 24CD, OPCSum 0

I haven't created a back up yet so theres no way for me to test if the flash worked, but is that what I should want see after a successful flash?

Yes I hope it is another success story. I'll take it that is what I wanted to see after the flash completed. Much thanks to Caster and Bryan. I've been visiting the forums for weeks prior to trying the flash to know what I might run into and I'll check back regularly in case someone has a similar problem so I can try and help them out.

;)

It was all there....

Anyways, if your originals work fine, then your backups should as well. If they dont, it is likely a media or backup process issue.

this tut worked for me. I was having trouble with my MS28 being recognized by a 6421L. No problems after this. Just one question though, once an updated f/w is released. Do we just flash over it, or do you have to run a restore like the hitachi-LG drives?

P.S... thanks to those who wrote this tut, and to text for helpin' a brother out! Thanks.
